HERO-ERA, an organization for historic automotive events, has teamed up exclusively with decarbonization specialist BeZero Carbon as part of the new NET-HERO initiative. This milestone is a further step towards achieving the 2019 target of offsetting 100% of emissions.
Innovative approach
HERO-ERA's ecological footprint in 2020 was 424 tons of carbon dioxide. This is made up of 4% from operations and a whopping 96% from rally operations, including rallies in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
The initiative takes an innovative approach to measuring the environmental footprint and full environmental impact of international and national historic motorsport events. The model considers all potential sources from greenhouse gas activities to vehicle fuel consumption, transportation, shipping, accommodation and more.
The inclusion and publication of all sources of emissions demonstrates HERO-ERA's commitment to advancing standards of responsibility and action for the benefit of climate protection at motorsport events.
HERO-ERA uses BeZero's carbon credit system to offset one hundred percent of the emissions produced in 2020. The credits are optimized to use a cross-ownership assessment method.
The system combines scientific analysis of carbon offset projects with modern portfolio theory to increase accuracy and create diversification benefits. The goal is to offset one "true ton" of carbon dioxide per credit purchased. Each credit purchased is certified by the UN Clean Development Mechanism, VCS and the UK Woodland Carbon Code.
The goal: emission-free
HERO-ERA is striving to use this system to be able to hold completely emission-neutral events in the future. The aim is to consolidate HERO-ERA's role as the leading organization in offsetting environmental impacts in the industry.
HERO-ERA will release NET-Hero together with BeZero in the coming months. This will create a dedicated platform with the aim of giving classic car enthusiasts and the wider automotive community a way to measure emissions and advocate for them to be fully offset.
HERO-ERA is working with other leading organizations in the field of classic car events to ensure that they also play their part in meeting the climatological challenges of the future, while protecting and nurturing the history and jobs of the industry. The CEBR (Centre for Economics and Business Research) report entitled 'Economic and Environmental Impact Study of the Historic and Classic Industry in the UK', which was commissioned by HERO-ERA, found that the historic motoring events industry is surprisingly large. Over £18.3 billion is generated annually and it employs around 113,000 people. This is roughly double the size of the global Scotch whisky industry and on a par with the UK's port industry.
