At first glance, the offerings that Gooding & Company will be auctioning off on March 4, 2022 in Amelia Island seem rather unbalanced. Cars with Porsche, BMW or Ferrari badges make up almost two thirds of the lot list. However, there is no shortage of attractive vehicles from other brands.
On average, the 99 cars are expected to cost USD 733,313, and the total value can be estimated at USD 72.5 million. After all, 48 percent of the lots are sold without a reserve price, so the auction house and the consignors are not lacking in confidence.
Despite a large proportion of young cars, the average age is over 46 years.
24 cars with a valuation of over one million
Almost exactly a quarter of the cars are expected to achieve a sale price of over one million USD.
Among these 24 cars are of course some Porsches and Ferraris, but also a Toyota, a RUF, a Shelby, a Bentley and a BMW as well as two Packards.
The Goutte d'Eau Coupé from Talbot
The most expensive car, like six other vehicles, dates from the pre-war period. With its aerodynamic bodywork by Figoni et Falaschi, which gave it the name "Goutte d'Eau" or "Teardrop", the Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS from 1937 is one of the most beautiful cars in history.
With concours appearances over the years, a category win at Pebble Beach and the "Best of Show" award at Amelia Island, chassis 90107 is one of the most sought-after cars at the auction, which is certainly documented by its estimated value of at least USD 10 million.
The Toyota 2000 GT from Shelby
Carroll Shelby prepared three Toyota sports cars for use in the SCCA Championship in the 1960s. Chassis MF10-10001 is also the first Toyota 2000 GT from series production and therefore probably one of the most important Japanese cars ever.
However, the car never ended up on the road, so it is being offered as a racing car for USD 2.75 to 3.5 million, making it the second most expensive car in the auction.
German manufacturers at the top
Porsche is at the top of the brand statistics with 33 vehicles on offer, followed by BMW (11) and Ferrari (incl. Dino, 11).
Mercedes-Benz is represented with six cars, the other brands with one to three cars, including exotic brands such as Sunbeam, Bizzarrini, Osca and Allard.
Impressive line-up of 911 racing cars
The Porsche 911 was also used on race tracks at an early stage, but it wasn't until the 1970s that things really took off with the 2.7 RS, 3.0 RSR, 934 and 935 models.
Gooding can offer at least one of all these cars, and two of the 935 will go under the hammer at prices between USD 1.5 and 2.0 million.
In addition, there is a 934/5 from 1977 for USD 1 to 1.3 million and two 3.0 RSRs from 1974, one of which is an IROC version.
A 2.7 RS as a Lightweight from 1973 is not missing either, with an estimate of USD 750,000 to 950,000.
The 1970s racing cars are complemented by various more recent GT2 and GT3 models, as well as a wide selection of road-going sports cars from the long history of the 911.
And the other Porsche racing cars
But there are not only 911s for auction on Amelia Island. Gooding can also add a 718 RSK from 1959, which is estimated at USD 2.5 to 3.5 million and was used by private driver Emil Pardee from 1959 to 1961.
The car, which has been extensively restored, has been owned by the same family for more than 50 years.
As if that wasn't enough, a 904/6 from 1965 is also coming under the hammer, one of only six cars produced that already bear a 906 chassis number (here 906-011).
The car was used for test drives at Le Mans and at Solitude, among other places. Vasek Polak used it from 1968. The plastic-bodied flounder is now said to be worth USD 2.5 to 3.25 million.
Of course, this is not the end of the Porsche collection, which also includes 356 models, a 968 and a Carrera GT.
An almost complete M3 collection
Five BMW M3s will be up for auction at Gooding on March 3, 2022, starting with two M3s from the E30 series, followed by an E36 and an E46. Even a late M3 from 2013 is up for grabs, especially in the special Lime Rock Park Edition.
The large BMW selection is complemented by a 503 Cabriolet, a 507, two 2002 tii, one of which is a Touring, as well as a 318is and a Z8.
Many super classics too, of course
There is never a shortage of valuable collector's classics at Gooding, and the Amelia Island auction is no exception.
From Ferrari, for example, you can buy an early 195 Inter Ghia Coupé from 1951 for USD 900,000 to 1.2 million or a 275 GTB from 1965 (USD 1.3 to 1.6 million). The 330 is offered as a GTS from 1967 and as a GT 2+2. A Dino 246 GTS from 1974 and an F40 (USD 2.4 to 2.8 million) are also up for grabs.
Jaguar is represented with an XK140 and an E-Type, Lancia with two Flaminia Zagato Coupés and an Aurelia B20 GT.
From Mercedes-Benz there is a 300 SL Gullwing from 1954 and several other SLs as well as a 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet.
Maserati competes with a Bora and a Ghibli Spider, while Shelby provides a 427 Cobra from 1966.
The Corvette C2 generation from Chevrolet is represented by two rare coupés, a Z06 split-window version from 1963 and a 427/390 variant from 1966.
And the ever-popular Fiat 500 Jolly by Ghia from 1959 is not missing either. After all, USD 90,000 to 120,000 has been set for the little one.
The price level is generally high, even for exotic cars such as the Osca MT4 2-AD 1500 Spider from 1954, which is expected to cost USD 1.1 to 1.4 million, or the OSca 1600 GT Coupé by Fissore from 1964, which is offered for USD 350,000 to 425,000.
However, there is currently no alternative to many of the cars on offer, even among the competition, so collectors will probably pounce on them. Whether they want to spend as much money as Gooding hopes will be seen on March 4, 2022.
