Normally, many older cars are also auctioned at Amelia Island, as visitors to the Concours are naturally also interested in the pre-war generation. However, Gooding & Co is taking a different approach on March 6, 2020 and offering a surprisingly young selection of classics and neoclassics. In fact, the average age is around 36 years. Nevertheless, the total value of the 88 cars on offer (plus a motorcycle and a 1:2 scale vehicle) is an impressive USD 38.2 million, which works out at USD 424,583 per vehicle. Around 70 percent of the lots are offered without a reserve price.
Strong focus on German brands
Only 21 car brands are represented on Gooding & Co, a quarter of which come from Germany. In terms of vehicles on offer, however, as many as 63 percent are German-made, with 57 cars from Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, RUF and Volkswagen alone going under the hammer.
Seven cars bear a Ferrari badge, the remaining brands are represented by a handful of cars at most in the catalog.
With the exception of American Bantam, there are no real exotics.
Only very few old cars
Just three cars date from the pre-war period, another from the war period, the rest were built after 1956. However, the early Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Silver Ghost from 1914 on offer is one of the more expensive vehicles in the auction with an estimated value of USD 2.7 to 3.7 million.
65 cars or more than two thirds were built after 1970, 35 even after 1990.
The so-called neo-classics with vintages from 2000 onwards are very strongly represented, with 26 cars in total. Which in turn explains the low average age.
Large BMW selection
A total of 18 BMW brand vehicles went under the hammer at the Gooding auction at Racquet Park in Florida. On average, they are exactly 30 years old.
The super classics such as the 507 or M1 are missing, but there are neo-classics such as the BMW 1M from 2011 (USD 40,000 to 60,000), several BMW M3s (E30 and E36) and a BMW 2002 Turbo from 1974 (USD 150,000 to 175,000).
The BMW "Bavaria" from 1971, an E3 2800, which is described as very original and in excellent condition, could also be of interest. USD 25,000 to 35,000 was set as the estimated value.
The Porsche with Swiss bodywork
As is well known, the Beutler brothers built bodies for the Porsche 356 almost from the very beginning. Early convertibles were fitted in Thun. Later, the Beutlers began to re-body the 356 so that it offered more space.
One of these coupés, chassis 13031, is being offered in Amelia Island for USD 400,000 to 600,000. Only five of these coupés are said to have been built in total, and the car offered by Gooding is said to be one of the two vehicles exhibited on the Beutler stand at the 1960 Geneva Motor Show.
There is a high probability that this could be the case, as the cars appear to match in terms of color choice.
The rest of the Porsche line-up of 21 cars consists of several 911 models, at least three 914 variants, but also eight vehicles of youngtimer and neoclassic age. There are also three more recent RUF models.
The most expensive is a Porsche 934 from 1976, which was valued at USD 1.25 to 1.6 million.
Classic Mercedes portfolio
The Mercedes selection is more traditional in comparison to the BMW range.
There is a 300 SL, two 190 SLs, a 280 SL Pagoda and a 560 SL from 1987. Some of the estimates are surprisingly high; a 190 SL from 1961, for example, is said to be worth USD 150,000 to 180,000, which is explained with a "complete nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration".
Volkswagen in the five-digit range
There are five VW models in the Gooding lot list: three Beetles, a Karmann-Ghia and a Westfalia Campmobile. None of the cars are really cheap; a Beetle Sedan from 1973 is said to cost USD 30,000 to 40,000.
At USD 35,000 to 45,000, the early Beetle 1200 from 1957 seems almost affordable. However, all VWs are sold without a reserve price.
Even super classics
Of course, Gooding & Co is not completely without the super classics known from other auctions.
This group includes the most expensive car in the auction, a Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider from 1958, chassis 0937 GT, which is expected to find a new owner for USD 9 to 11 million.
The Dino 246 GT from 1973 is also one of the super classics, the unusually painted example has an estimate of USD 325,000 to 375,000.
Two cars on offer bear the Maserati trident, a Ghibli 4.9 SS Spider from 1972 (USD 900,000 to 1.1 million) and a Frua Quattroporte Series II from 1966 (USD 60,000 to 80,000).
A Lamborghini 350 GT from 1964 (USD 400,000 to 500,000) and a Miura P400 S from 1969 (USD 1.4 to 1.8 million) will go under the hammer.
And of course, the Audi Sport quattro from 1986 (USD 550,000 to 700,000) is also among the super classics.
More information and pictures of the individual vehicles can be found on the Gooding & Co. website.
