Gooding & Co will be closing Amelia Island Week on March 8, 2019, with the Concours d'Elégance naturally taking center stage. With 90 cars, Gooding's range is somewhat more manageable than that of the competition. And with an average age of just 40 years, the cars are relatively young, which is mainly due to the 17 neo-classics, but also 11 youngtimers.
Porsche in the lead
It is mainly sports and racing cars from Porsche that will dominate the action.
31 Porsches and one Kremer-Porsche represent more than a third of the cars on offer.
The Ferrari contingent is comparatively compact with ten cars, BMW is represented with nine and Mercedes-Benz with seven. The remaining 24 brands have a maximum of three vehicles, including manufacturers that have long since disappeared such as Delahaye, Hudson, Kurtis and Osca.
Two well-known racing cars from Porsche
The Kremer Porsche 962C from 1987 took part in Le Mans twice, in 1987 and 1988, finishing 4th and 8th respectively. Chassis CK6-87 is now expected to find a new owner for USD 1 to 1.25 million. That should be quite realistic.
The Porsche 935 from 1979, which was one of the last customer 935s with chassis 930 990 0027, became significantly more valuable.
The car cost USD 134,963.10 new at the time, now USD 2.55 to 3 million is to be invested. And this despite a relatively short racing history.
Many road-going Porsches
The range of sports cars from Zuffenhausen that Gooding has put together is wonderfully varied. There is not only a 356 A Speedster or various 911 models, but also a 914, an extremely rare 924 Carrera GTS Clubsport and a Porsche 968, the last incarnation of the four-cylinder transaxle theme.
The 911 Carrera RS Lightweight from 1973 is likely to be a highlight; after all, only 200 such cars were built. However, USD 1 to 1.2 million is also a high entry ticket.
Interesting BMW line-up
Of the ten BMWs on offer, four are from the 1970s and one from the 1960s. However, it is probably the oldest of these cars that is particularly interesting.
This is one of the rare 1800 Ti/SA from 1965. Chassis 995197 was one of the last Ti/SA built and was never used for racing. It only became a "vintage racer" in modern times and is now expected to cost USD 125,000 to 175,000.
A BMW 2002 Turbo from 1974 is expected to find a new owner for only a little less. The car is valued at USD 120,000 to 150,000. It is accompanied by two other 2002 models, which are expected to sell in the five-figure range.
An M3 E30 from 1988 and a convertible version from 1991 are also part of the offer.
Rare Abarth
With the Abarth 207/A from 1957, you can buy a very early racing sports car from Carlo Abarth. The design was created by Giovanni Michelotti, while the technical basis was largely adopted from Cisitalia.
Only 10 examples of the 207/A were built; the example on offer was used in races at Sebring, Watkins Glen and Road America, among others. Chassis 001 was estimated at USD 400,000 to 500,000.
The Kurtis Sports Car
The Kurtis Sports Car is hardly known in this country. No wonder, as only 16 cars were built by Frank Kurtis. Chassis KB016 has another special feature: it was used in the movie "Johnny Dark", in which Tony Curtis also appeared (coincidental similarity of names).
The car was restored by Frank Kurtis' son, and the elegant car is powered by a Cadillac V8 engine. Estimated at USD 275,000 to 350,000, not too much for a potential concours winner, is it?
Also from the USA and also interesting is the Hudson Commodore Eight as a convertible from Brougham from 1949. At USD 100,000 to 150,000, it costs only half as much as the Kurtis.
The oldest
The Packard Twin Six 1-35 7-Passanger Touring from 1915 is one of the first V12 cars ever built.
It also looks a little like it is that old, as it has never been restored and has not survived the decades without a trace. After all, a matching V12 is still installed and it was still driven a few decades ago. Now USD 100,000 to 130,000 is enough to buy this contemporary witness.
However, it is also possible to get a much lower price, as Gooding also has a number of low-priced cars in its program, such as a VW 181 from 1973, which is offered for USD 25,000 to 35,000. Of course, there is no minimum price, as is the case with a total of 58 vehicles or 65 percent of the offer. Bargains could therefore be possible, for example with the Fiat 600 Jolly from 1959 or the Alfa Romeo Giulia SS from 1964.
However, the most expensive cars are not offered without a reserve price, including an Audi Sport Quattro from 1984, which was estimated at an impressive USD 450,000 to 525,000.
Further information and pictures of the auction can be found on the Gooding & Company website.
