Arizona Week is always eagerly awaited as it heralds the start of the new auction year. All the major auction houses are on site, including Gooding & Co, which will be auctioning 138 cars and an engine at Scottsdale Fashion Square on January 17 and 18, 2020.
Over 48 years old on average
Gooding does not seem to be following the trend that cars offered at auction are getting younger and younger. In fact, the average age of the lots is over 48 years and as many as 18 lots date from the pre-war period.
In total, the 138 cars (and the Offenhauser engine) are worth almost USD 50 million, which means an average of around USD 360,000 per car.
Ferrari, Porsche and others
With 42 brands on 138 cars, the range is considerable, but Ferrari and Porsche alone are represented with 24 vehicles each. Mercedes-Benz and Chevrolet each appear ten times, with all other brands in single figures.
The brand rarities certainly include suppliers such as American Bantam, Cord, Hispano-Suiza, Knox, Stutz and Tucker.
Valuables from Maranello
It is probably no coincidence that five of the 10 most expensive cars in the auction are Ferrari sports cars.
At the top end of the scale is the F50 from 1996. Red and with chassis number ZFFTG46A5S0103922, the car, of which only 349 were built, is now expected to sell for USD 3.2 to 3.6 million, nota bene with just 5200 miles on the clock.
The Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider from 1972 with chassis number 14779 was moved a little more. With classic paintwork and less than 40,000 miles driven, the Spider is said to be worth USD 2 to 2.4 million to its new owner.
The Ferrari 500 Superfast from 1965, chassis 6305 SF, costs a little more. After all, only 36 of this model were built and the coupé on offer is said to be the only car painted black at the factory. This is expected to fetch the buyer USD 2.5 to 3 million.
Only slightly less money is being asked for a yellow Ferrari 330 GTS from 1967, chassis 10111. Only 99 of these open 330s were built, the vehicle on offer has been completely restored and is now expected to cost USD 2.2 to 2.5 million.
One of 51 Tuckers
Only 51 Tuckers were built, one of which, chassis 1034, was completed in 1948 and has covered just 6300 miles in its career. It is said to have been a promotional vehicle for Tucker.
Now USD 1.75 to 2.25 million is being asked for the rare American. After all, you are buying a car that has already been burned on celluloid, as an appearance in the movie "Tucker: The Man and His Dream" is part of the history of this vehicle.
Pre-war gems
Among the pre-war vehicles, the Hispano-Suiza J12 Dual Cowl Phaeton from 1932 with chassis number 13016 naturally stands out.
Only 114 were built, and only ten J12s with open bodies are said to have survived. An estimate of USD 1.5 to 2 million is given.
Hardly less exclusive is the Duesenberg Model JN from 1936 with chassis number 2599. Only ten cars of this variant were built; the car on offer is one of three surviving JNs with a long wheelbase. USD 800,000 to 1,000,000 should be on the account of interested parties.
The Lancia Lambda from the 5th series with torpedo bodywork from 1925, which also made it to the Pebble Beach Concours, is certainly also of interest. Chassis 13603 is expected to cost USD 275,000 to 350,000.
The oldest car in the auction is a Knox Type 0 5 Passenger Touring from 1910 with chassis number CA972059. This car has also been to Pebble Beach and is now expected to change hands for USD 175,000 to 225,000.
Super sports cars of the fifties and sixties
Yellow and flat, that's how a Lamborghini Miura should be. Chassis 3787 is one of 140 Miura S, built in 1969 and already shown at the Pebble Beach Concours in 1996.
Now USD 1.25 to 1.5 million is being asked for the once-restored Miura P400 S.
Gooding can offer three Mercedes-Benz 300 SLs from the W198 model series. The gullwing with chassis 198.040.5500553 is expected to change hands for USD 1 to 1.2 million, while the two roadsters from 1958 and 1961 are expected to find new garages for slightly less money.
Three Jaguar E-Type Series 1 complete the sixties sports car range, two come with the 3.8-liter engine, one with 4.2 liters. All three are expected to cost around USD 200,000 to 300,000.
For those who prefer something a little younger, consider the 1981 BMW M1, which is listed in the catalog for USD 400,000 to 500,000.
Cheaper cars too
Well, as we all know, Gooding can never offer really cheap cars. But the USD 15,000 to 20,000 to be paid for a 1960 Peugeot 403 station wagon (chassis 2859122) is the entry threshold, so to speak. For that you get a station wagon that is very rare in the USA (and certainly here too), presents itself "charmingly" and is sold without a minimum bid, just like two thirds of the other (mostly cheaper cars).
A Mercedes-Benz 280 SE from 1978 was delivered in a very special specification. The car is painted yellow, has an avocado-colored interior and a four-speed manual transmission. Originally registered in Germany, the car is said to have covered only 32,800 kilometers in its lifetime, which perhaps explains its estimated value of USD 60,000 to 80,000.
Another of the more affordable cars is a very special Jaguar XK140 from 1956, which was fitted with a coupé body reminiscent of pre-war aerodynamic cars by Nissan designer John Toom and is now estimated to cost USD 125,000 to 150,000.
Those with a taste for the unusual should perhaps take a closer look at the Fiat 1100/103 E TV Coupé with Vignale bodywork from 1956. With an estimated price of USD 225,000 to 275,000, the car is certainly not a special offer, but for this money you get almost a one-off (three cars with the additional designation "Désirée" were built to Michelotti design). Chassis 332266 is on offer.
More information on the individual vehicles can be found on the Gooding & Co. website.
