Attention Porsche collectors! Of the 128 cars that Gooding-Christie's will be auctioning on March 5 and 6 at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, 34 bear the mark of the Zuffenhausen brand - and a further four bear the Ruf logo. This oversupply is probably related to the "Werks Reunion" of the Porsche Cub of America, which is also taking place as part of the beauty contest. Those who are considering buying a 356 have the greatest choice: 15 examples from the early "Knickscheibe" to the late SC will go under the hammer in Florida, all without a minimum price.
A total of 88 of the 132 lots (in addition to the 128 cars, there are also four motorcycles) are being offered without a minimum bid. The total value of the offer is estimated at 80 million dollars, a good fifth of which is accounted for by the most expensive lot alone: a Ferrari 250 California Spider with a short wheelbase, delivered new to Auto Becker in Düsseldorf in 1960, is expected to fetch between 16 and 18 million dollars. However, the original color combination of silver paint with gray upholstery was not retained during the restoration.
With 17 cars, Ferrari is the second most popular brand in the catalog after Porsche and is also likely to be the second and third most expensive car in the auction. A 750 Monza (USD 3.5-4.5 million) and a 275 GTB/4 (USD 2.9-3.3 million) follow at some distance from the top Spider
Barn finds
Lot number 44 could be less expensive, at least in terms of purchase, but more historically significant. The Ferrari 342 America with chassis number 0130 AL is said to be the first of only seven examples built and the only one to be fitted with a Ghia body. Subsequently, the presumably dark blue coupé was exhibited at the Paris Salon and the London Motor Show, where it is said to have been sold to a certain David Brown. Unfortunately, 0130 AL has spent the last few decades in rather damp storage, which is why the price of 900,000 to 1,200,000 dollars should be seen more as a "starting fee".
The Ferrari 250 GT with lot number 47 is also in a similar condition. A special feature of the former grey coupé are the headlights, which have been moved back to the sixties and covered with Plexiglas hoods. The restoration object with a possible racing past is said to be worth between 300,000 and 500,000 dollars.
The Porsche 356 Speedster with lot number 45, which is estimated at 140,000 to 180,000 dollars, is also in great need of restoration. This puts it even higher than most of its restored model series colleagues on offer. The oldest 356 at Gooding Christie's is possibly also the most interesting, as the "buckling disk" presents itself with the traces of 75 years of motorsport in a similarly worn appearance, but is said to be technically overhauled and ready to drive. The coupé is expected to find a new owner for an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 dollars.
Porsche rarities
In line with the general trend, the younger Porsches are probably the more expensive ones on Amelia Island. A Carrera GT for 1.5 to 1.8 million dollars as the most expensive representative of its brand is followed by an at first glance inconspicuous 968 for 900,000 to 1.2 million dollars. However, the zermatt silver coupé is one of only 14 968 Turbo S cars built. The example offered by Gooding Christie's also comes from a prominent first owner: it was ordered by tennis player Helena Suková in 1993.
Things get even more exclusive with the only Ruf 928R ever built, which was commissioned by the Chairman of the Samsung Group in 1989. The V8, which was boosted to around 360 hp, is said to have driven the black coupé only 2,500 kilometers. The fact that the estimated price of 400,000 to 500,000 is not even half that of the 968 seems a little surprising in view of this.
Special Italians
At 425,000 to 525,000 dollars, the lot with the number 126 is somewhat more expensive, but twice as common on the roads of the world. While most Osca 1600s were fitted by Zagato, only two examples are said to have received their bodywork from Touring.
The Fiat Dino Berlinetta Speciale by Pininfarina is another one-off that was shown at the Paris (1967) and Geneva (1968) motor shows. Because the coupé designed by Paolo Martin was exclusively in collections after its trade fair appearances (in the factory until 1991, then privately), it is now in unusually good original condition. It is expected to fetch between 575,000 and 775,000 dollars.
Unusually expensive
In addition to all the rarities and specialties, two comparatively ordinary two-seaters also stand out due to their six-figure estimated prices. One is the MGA Twin-Cam with lot number 144: The 1959 roadster in the rare color "Alamo Beige" was equipped ex works with many racing accessories such as an oil cooler, close-ratio gearbox and low windscreen, which the auction house uses to justify the estimated price of 120,000 to 160,000 dollars.
On the other hand, the Mercedes-Benz 560 SL with the lot number 178: the petrol-colored convertible with cream-beige upholstery has only covered 6500 miles (10,500 km) since it was delivered, which is said to be worth 100,000 to 125,000 dollars to one bidder. Theoretically, however, it can also be sold for a tenth of its estimate, as the SL - like the MGA - is being offered without a reserve price.
Affordable with two, three and four wheels
Of course, you can get a car on Amelia Island for considerably less. However, 40,000 to 60,000 euros for a 1979 Beetle convertible is not exactly a bargain either. However, this is a "Triple White" special model with white paintwork, white soft top and white interior as well as (non-white) wood trim on the dashboard. The "Super Beetle Convertible" from the last US model year comes from museum ownership and has only covered 86 miles (130 km).
The triple white Beetle is estimated to be the cheapest four-wheeled car in Gooding Christie's catalog. Below it, there are only three motorcycles and a 1933 Morgan Three-Wheeler in need of renovation for 15,000 to 20,000 dollars. A lot of work also awaits the new owner of the cheapest lot at 10,000 to 15,000 dollars: a Vincent Comet from 1951. If you want something ready to ride, you will have to budget at least 18,000 to 24,000 dollars for the 1971 Ducati 350 Desmo "Silver Shotgun".
