It's no longer completely new, Irv Gordon's Volvo P 1800 has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records for quite some time as the furthest non-commercial car driven by an owner.
But Gordon doesn't really care, he just keeps on driving. In September, the mileage is expected to reach three million, which equates to almost five million kilometers, which he may yet reach. "The car would certainly be capable of driving another million miles, but whether I am is another question," says the first owner, who bought the red Volvo on a Friday in June 1966.
He covered over 2,000 km on the very first weekend and took the car back to the dealer for its first service on Monday. Since then, he has driven almost every road in the United States in it, as he believes there is no better way to explore the country than in his own car.
Volvo has set up a microsite especially for the world record Volvo.
