On July 2, 2022, the Austrian auction house Dorotheum will once again be auctioning off classic vehicles at the Dorotheum Fahrzeug und Technik Zentrum Wien in Vösendorf.
The offer is extensive and comprises 87 vehicles, including six motorcycles, but also a tractor and a few commercial vehicles from all age groups.
On average, the vehicles are 56 years old, with the oldest dating from 1907 and the youngest from 2005. Together, the vehicles were estimated at a total of around EUR 6 million, which equates to EUR 69,017 per lot. A good quarter of the vehicles are being offered without a reserve price.
Mercedes-Benz ahead of Porsche
40 different manufacturer brands are represented in Vösendorf, with Mercedes-Benz (11 vehicles), Porsche (7), BMW and Jaguar (6 each) and Volkswagen (5) at the top of the list.
The brands also include almost forgotten manufacturers such as LaSalle, Rovin and Barkas.
Rare microcars
You don't come across a Rovin D4 Type C every day. With 13 hp and a top speed of 85 km/h, the convertible was produced in around 1200 units between 1950 and 1953.
Dorotheum's Rovin bears the chassis number C 2600 and was built in 1953. It has obviously been used extensively (mileage 99,994 km), but is still running and appears to be complete. However, it shows a lot of patina. An exciting project, estimated at EUR 7000 to 10,000, but will go under the hammer without a reserve price.
The three Goggomobils, which represent almost the entire spectrum of small glass car production at the time, also belong to the small cars. A red Goggomobil T250 from 1958 (EUR 6000 to 9000, no limit), a blue TS 250 Coupé from 1969 (EUR 8000 to 12'000, no limit) and a gray TL 300 van from 1956, which is said to be a pre-production example and which, lovingly and elaborately restored, is expected to find a new owner for EUR 60,000 to 80,000.
The aforementioned small cars are joined by an NSU Prinz II from 1958, which is listed in the catalog with an estimate of EUR 12,000 to 18,000.
Pre-war rarities
With 12 cars, the proportion of pre-war vehicles is comparatively high.
The oldest car is a De Dion-Bouton Type AU 8CV from 1907, which is looking for a new garage for EUR 50,000 to 70,000.
However, among the vehicles built up to 1940 there is also an elegant S.S. Jaguar 100 2 1/2 Litre from 1937 (EUR 280,000 to 360,000) or three BMW early works, namely a BMW DA3 Type Wartburg from 1930 (EUR 55'000 to 75,000), a 309 convertible coupé from 1935 (EUR 20,000 to 28,000) and a 327 coupé from 1940 (EUR 110,000 to 170,000).
Fans of rustic roadsters should take a closer look at the MG J2 Midget from 1932, which was estimated at EUR 25,000 to 35,000, but will go under the hammer without a reserve price.
Many bread-and-butter cars
Cars that once dominated road traffic but are rarely seen today can also be found in the Dorotheum offering.
Examples include a Volkswagen 1200 L from 1981 (EUR 8,000 to 12,000, no reserve price), a Mini 1000 HL from 1986 (EUR 12,000 to 18,000), a Morris Minor 1000 from 1962 (EUR 8,000 to 12,000, no reserve price) or a Volvo P 122 S from 1970 (EUR 18,000 to 26,000, no reserve price).
Also of interest is the Simca 1100 LS from 1972, a station wagon version that was delivered to a Viennese cabinetmaker's shop in 1972. The Simca has remained unrestored to this day and has less than 40,000 km on the clock; EUR 7,000 to 10,000 (without limit) are set for it.
Cars with famous previous owners
Dorotheum can also offer some vehicles from prominent previous owners.
Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky drove a yellow 1975 VW Beetle 1303 Cabriolet at his vacation home in Mallorca at the end of the 1970s, which remained in the family for a long time after his death. Now this well-known car is looking for a new owner for EUR 30,000 to 40,000 who will cherish it.
Prince Ernst August of Hanover liked things a little more extravagant and sporty. He therefore ordered a fun yellow Z1 from 1989 and remained loyal to the car until 2020, probably covering around 26,000 km in that time. The car is now for sale for an estimated EUR 75,000 to 95,000.
And then there is one of the rare 1971 Porsche 911 S 2.2s for auction, which was once driven by a member of the Porsche family and was equipped with some unusual ingredients. The coupé is now expected to cost between EUR 190,000 and 250,000.
Many super classics
Dorotheum has a considerable number of super classics on offer. Various Mercedes SL models dominate, including two 190 SLs and two Pagodas.
But there are also several Porsche 911s for sale, as well as a Mercedes-Benz 600. The Mercedes-Benz 500 E can certainly also be counted among the guild of super classics.
However, the example on offer is an even rarer variant with an AMG 6-liter engine from 1991, which is said to cost EUR 120,000 to 160,000 and is therefore significantly more expensive than the equally rare BMW M635 CSi from 1985 (EUR 80,000 to 110,000).
A Lancia Flaminia GT 2.5 3C from 1966 and a Fiat Dino Spider from 1967 are also rarities on offer.
An early Dino 246 GT from 1970 from the L series is expected to cost EUR 340,000 to 420,000. Two Jaguar sports cars, an E-Type and an XK140, are considerably cheaper.
The Iso Lele from 1974 and the Subeam Tiger Mk II from 1967 are rare, but in both cases a five-figure sum should be enough to buy them.
Some neo-classics and youngtimers
Ten of the vehicles to be auctioned were built in the 1990s or later.
The most expensive car in the auction, a Porsche Carrera GT from 2005, belongs to this category and is also the youngest car in the auction. It is expected to fetch between EUR 950,000 and 1.35 million.
Other youngtimers are less expensive, such as the red Ferrari F355 Spider with manual gearbox from 1997, which was estimated at between EUR 125,000 and 155,000. The same can be said of the 1994 Chrysler Viper RT/10, which is listed in the catalog at EUR 120,000 to 200,000.
A Lancia Delta Integrale Evo II from 1994 is offered at a slightly lower price, here EUR 65,000 to 85,000 should be enough to buy it.
As always, Dorotheum's offer is diverse, and the auction on July 2, 2022 in Vösendorf will be correspondingly exciting. Bidding is already open (online). You can read more about the vehicles and see lots of pictures on the Dorotheum website.
