Around 500 racing cars from all motorsport eras will populate the Nürburgring at the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix from August 12 to 14. From touring cars and GTs to sportscars and formula cars, the motorsport palette will be on display in a total of 20 races and regularity tests (GLP).
Lots of interest for the elders
The oldest racing cars of the weekend traditionally attract a lot of spectator interest: These are the pre-war vehicles that are perfectly accommodated in the contemporary setting of the historic paddock at the Nürburgring. A good 50 of the rare racing cars will come together here, some of which are of particular historical value.
This includes, for example, the winning vehicle of the first automobile race on the Nürburgring: a supercharged Mercedes-Benz 680 S from 1927. The cooperation with the Allgemeiner Schnauferl Club (ASC) ensures the exceptional quality and originality of many of the participating vehicles.
Many of the weekend's oldest vehicles will have a close connection to the history of the Nürburgring at the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix.
The Mercedes-Benz 680 S from 1927 in which the legendary Rudolf Caracciola won the inaugural race of the Eifel circuit is definitely of the greatest historical motorsport value. The hotelier's son from Remagen was the first to deliberately use the ditch in the "Karussell" on today's Nordschleife in order to get through the tight left-hand bend more quickly. This was the impetus for the later conversion of this section of the track with beveled concrete slabs - today's official name "Caracciola Carousel" is a reminder of this.
And at the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix, the pre-war racing cars will be taking the carousel under their wheels as well. In addition to the two GLP on the Grand Prix circuit, the four dozen or so participants of the 'Vintage Sports Car Trophy & The ASC Trophy' will also be taking part in two one-hour drives on the Nordschleife on Saturday (from 8:15 a.m.) and Sunday (from 8:35 a.m.).
In addition, the participants will set off on Saturday afternoon on the traditional touristic drive, which leads 80 kilometers through the Eifel. Visitors will therefore have plenty of opportunities to admire the beautiful historic vehicles.
A participant from the very beginning sits in a BMW 328
The mighty supercharged Mercedes with the Caracciola-680 S in the lead form an impressive group of participating vehicles. They meet their traditional rivals in the Eifel - the Bentleys, which set the tone at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the 1920s. In general, it is the variety of brands, models and concepts that makes the event so much fun. For example, displacement dwarfs such as a Rosengart LR2 Sport (1928) or the MG PA (1934) are also included.
The legendary BMW 328 is also closely linked to the history of the Nürburgring and will be on display several times: It celebrated its premiere 80 years ago at the Eifelrennen on the Nürburgring and developed into the dream sports car of its time. A special participant will be sitting in one of the approximately 80 hp six-cylinder cars: Uli Sauer from Iserlohn. He has been competing in his 1938 BMW since the very first AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix and will therefore be taking part in the event for the 44th time this year.
