It was exciting right to the end: some winners beat other popular classic cars out of the race by just a few votes. Zwischengas and the organizers of Swiss Classic World, Switzerland's largest classic car trade fair, as well as partners AMAG and TSM Insurance wanted to find out one thing together: Which vehicles newcomers to the scene and the next generation of classic car enthusiasts are interested in.
From March 4 to April 3, 2023, a good 3,000 classic car and youngtimer enthusiasts in Switzerland voted for their favorite models.
In six categories - small cars, saloons, coupés, convertibles, super sports cars and SUVs/off-road vehicles - there were a total of 70 vehicles to choose from, carefully selected on the basis of access and search statistics on zwischengas.com. In some of the categories, the outcome was very close, especially in the super sports car category.
In the small and compact car category, the Peugeot 205 won by a clear margin (44% of votes) ahead of the Renault Twingo and the VW Golf III. The Jaguar XJ won the saloon category (23% of votes), followed by the Volvo 850 and Citroën XM. The coupé category was won by the BMW 850i (18% of the votes), followed by the Porsche 996 and the Honda NSX in second and third place.
The BMW Z3 was voted the most popular convertible (14% of votes). However, the lead over the Mazda MX-5 (13%), Ferrari F 355 Spider (13%) and Lotus Elise (12%) was very narrow. The super sports cars were neck and neck, with the Lamborghini Diablo ultimately winning with 17% of the vote ahead of the McLaren F1 with 16%. In the SUV and off-road vehicle group, the Range Rover (23%) came out on top, beating the Mercedes-Benz/Puch G (20%) and the Lada Niva (12%).
AMAG's involvement in this Youngtimer election supported the efforts of Zwischengas and Swiss Classic World to ensure that used cars that are already 20 years old are appropriately recognized and protected. They are part of our mobility history. Together with Synhelion and Solarfuels, AMAG wants to ensure that classic and vintage cars can be driven in a CO2-neutral manner in the future and remain a cultural asset on the roads. AMAG Classic in Schinznach-Bad and the Porsche Classic Center in Schlieren ensure that these vehicles can also be maintained, repaired and preserved.
With its new "Classic Wheels" insurance, TSM offers all youngtimer and classic car owners individual, "tailor-made" insurance cover at the best conditions and in dialog with TSM experts who share the same passion. TSM has its origins in the Swiss watch industry and has been providing comprehensive protection for the valuable goods of local watch manufacturers since 1921 as a cooperative under the name "Transports Société Mutuelle". The cooperative aims to provide all traditional Swiss customers with transport insurance cover at attractive conditions and the best premium rates.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part and cast their vote. The winners of the competition will be determined and announced during the Swiss Classic World in Lucerne on Sunday, June 4. Each winner will also be contacted by e-mail.
