This winter, the Erwin Hymer Museum is taking visitors back to the time of the first big boom in motorhomes in its current exhibition program. Numerous vintage motorhomes from the 1980s have been added to the exhibition. The vehicles from a wide variety of manufacturers and body types show the wide range of vehicles on offer in response to the growing demand from campers for comfort and independence. These include firsts from Hobby and LMC that have been preserved in almost original condition, famous classics from Hymer, Niesmann + Bischoff and Dethleffs, a motorhome from the Italian pioneer Arca, which built one of the first alcove vehicles, and an example of the rare Eriba-Cars.
The exhibition also offers a look under the bodywork of motorhomes: using the chassis of a Hymermobil, visitors learn why the choice of base vehicle plays an important role in the construction of a motorhome and why the Fiat Ducato has been successful for almost forty years. "The Big Boom" uses multimedia to explain to visitors of all ages what an alcove is and why motorhomes with a bed above the cab were so popular in the 1980s. They learn why motorhomes became more attractive, how the desire for freedom and independence led to parking bans and how the first towns discovered parking spaces for motorhomes as a tourism factor.
The exhibition program "The Great Boom" can be seen in the permanent exhibition of the Erwin Hymer Museum until 16 April 2023. Registration is not necessary. Museum admission only, children have free admission.
