As part of Monterey Car Week, Broad Arrow Auctions will be auctioning off over 150 automobile collector's items worth between 110 and 120 million US dollars on August 14 and 15. On average, each lot is valued at just under 700,000 dollars. The setting for the auction is the Monterey Jet Center at the airport in the east of the city. A good third of the cars, which are on average 47 years old, will be offered without a reserve price.
The consignor of a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster, which is the most expensive lot without a reserve with an estimated price of 1.1 to 1.3 million US dollars, has the strongest nerves. At the same time, it is one of 27 cars that have been estimated at a hammer price of at least seven figures - and, together with a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT, forms the lower end of the million-dollar lots.
The most expensive of the millionaires and therefore also (probably) the most expensive car in the entire auction is the Porsche 911 GT1 from "Rohr Racing", which won the IMSA GTS 1 Championship in 1997. The yellow racing car with the red, blue and green splashes is one of only new customer cars and took 47th place in the 1997 24 Hours of Le Mans. Between 8.5 and 10.5 million dollars are expected to be paid for the tube racer.
Chevrolet far ahead
The Zuffenhausen-based sports car manufacturer is also the most represented brand with 30 cars in the auction. It is followed by the usual high-caliber Ferrari with 22 and Mercedes-Benz with 16 cars in the auction catalog. Less typical for such a high-price auction is the fourth most represented brand in the lot list: Chevrolet. The middle 80 percent of the lot is made up of Corvettes from 1955 to '66.
The upper and lower price ends of the Chevrolets are particularly interesting. A 1968 Yenko SC, one of only 64 high-performance Chevrolet Camaro models built by Don Yenko, is expected to fetch between 400,000 and 500,000 dollars. The 1941 Chevrolet Special De Luxe Station Wagon, on the other hand, is set at just 75,000 to 90,000 dollars - with no reserve price.
This makes it one of only 13 cars that remain in the five-figure range even at the maximum estimate. According to the auction house's prediction, the cheapest lot is a Morris Minor 1000 Tourer for 25,000 to 35,000 dollars. Interestingly, the Continental Mark II also remains below the hundred-thousand-dollar mark at 70,000 to 90,000 dollars. The MGA Twin Cam, which was estimated at an unusually high 90,000 to 120,000 dollars, broke this barrier. It will be interesting to see how much they go for in the end, as both Continental and MG will be auctioned without a limit.
US rarities and a Swiss special body
In addition to European splendor, the Broad Arrow offerings for Monterey also include gems of US automotive engineering. The Mercer 35 Raceabout from 1913 enjoys the status of a Mercedes-Benz SSKL in its home country and will be valued accordingly at 2.5 to 3 million dollars.
Hardly less legendary is the grandly failed Tucker from 1948, which has been estimated at 1.5 to 2 million dollars. The reddish-brown sedan was previously owned by George Lucas and is the third "production" model built. The 1953 Oldsmobile Fiesta is comparatively inexpensive at 140,000 to 185,000 dollars. The convertible, of which only 458 were built, is the little-known third General Motors spearhead alongside the Cadillac Eldorado and Buick Skylark.
The Bizzarrini GT 5300 Strada on offer is not an original from the 1960s, but a replica from the current millennium. However, at 300,000 to 500,000 dollars, it is only half as expensive. The bizarrely futuristic Italdesign Aztec with Audi engine and Lancia drive is a genuine Italian designer piece. The silver-grey spaceship roadster has been estimated at 275,000 to 325,000 dollars.
A Swiss car has also made it to California: The Delahaye 135 M in the auction catalog for the Jet Center auction has a convertible body by Graber. Only two Delahaye 135s were fitted in this way by the Bernese coachbuilder. The example on offer should already know its way around Monterey, as it already competed at the Concours d'Elegance in Pebble Beach in 2022. Between 300,000 and 350,000 dollars are expected for the right-hand drive car.
