The Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 is an icon of the 1980s. At the auction at the NEC Classic Car Show, which takes place from November 11 to 12, 2017, one example could set a new auction record ...
The Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 was specifically designed to help Ford win the British and European Touring Car Championships. This required 500 Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 road cars to be built to homologate the model for motorsport. Silverstone Auctions can now offer a 1988 example, which is one of only 56 examples delivered in white.
The 224 hp super sedan was discovered in 2007 by car dealer Joe Macari in a vintage Ferrari collection in Germany. He later sold it to a private Ford collector, who placed the car in a climate-controlled warehouse, where it has been stored to this day and therefore has a very low mileage of around 6000.
The RS500 is in near-perfect original condition, which is rare these days as most high-performance Fords from this era have been heavily modified over the years. The only work that has been done to this car was a major service in 2014 when the engine belts, battery and fluids were replaced.
Respected RS500 registrar Paul Linfoot describes the car as "one of the most original and best RS500s available on the market today".
Nick Whale, Managing Director of Silverstone Auctions, added: "Very few of us have ever come across one in such good condition, with such low mileage. The Sierra Cosworth RS500 really is the car of the moment amongst collectors and this is the best example I have ever seen."
A similar 1987 RS500 with twice the mileage made headlines earlier this year when it fetched a record price of £115,000 at Silverstone Auctions' Silverstone Classic sale. All eyes will be on this example in November 2017, which will go under the hammer for a conservative estimate of £100,000 to £115,000.
