Bonhams will attempt to sell 101 cars, a motorcycle team and a trailer on February 6, 2020 at the Grand Palais in Paris as part of a one-day auction, initiated by over 130 automobile lots. The vehicles are estimated to be worth more than EUR 41 million, an average of almost EUR 410,000 per car.
Broad spectrum
Over 40 brands will be represented at the Grand Palais, led by Porsche (11 vehicles), Mercedes-Benz (10) and Ferrari (9). Other manufacturers such as Alvis, Auburn, Bristol, Citroën, Horch, Toyota and Volvo will each be represented with one vehicle.
On average, the cars are over 58 years old; with 27 pre-war vehicles, the old guard is well represented, while the youngtimers and neoclassics together account for 13 vehicles.
Bugatti invasion
Only rarely do pre-war Bugatti cars come under the hammer in one day. Bonhams achieved this feat.
The most expensive of the seven blue bloods is said to be a Type 55 from 1931, which competed at Le Mans with Chiron and Bouriat-Quintart. Only 38 of these cars were built and the bodywork by Giuseppe Figoni is without doubt a masterpiece. It was estimated to be worth between EUR 4 and 7 million.
A Type 57 Atalante Coupé from 1938 with chassis number 57633 is said to cost EUR 1.5 to 1.8 million.
Another Type 57 is advertised as a 1939 Stelvio Coupé for EUR 1.35 to 1.65 million.
The Type 39 Grand Prix from 1925 with racing history is expected to be less expensive, but certainly no less attractive, with an estimate of EUR 1.05 to 1.4 million.
The four Bugattis are complemented by a Type 23 from 1922, a Type 40 Grand Sport Tourer from 1927 and a Type 13 Sports, which represents the entry into Bonhams Bugatti heaven at EUR 190,000 to 240,000.
The special Ds on France
Delage and Delahaye were among the great pre-war French marques. Bonhams has one Delage and three Delahaye on offer.
The Delage D8S Cabriolet Special with bodywork by Henry Chapron from 1935 (chassis 39332) is expected to attract bids in the EUR 800,000 to 1.2 million range.
The three Delahaye, two versions of the Type 135 and a Type 235 model with bodies by Labourdette, Chapron and Antem were valued at EUR 180,000 to 300,000.
The special Dino
The Dino 206S/SP is one of the most elegant sports car prototypes of all time.
18 examples were built, chassis 022 will be auctioned at the Grand Palais. An estimated value for the open-top racing car, which was mainly used in Italy in the late 1960s but also internationally, is not given, but one can certainly assume a mid-single-digit million figure.
Stratos in the original and reinterpreted
With two Stratos, an original from 1976 (EUR 400,000 to 500,000) and a reinterpretation from 2019 (built on a Ferrari 430 Scuderia from 2009), called MAT New Stratos Coupé (EUR 700,000 to 900,000), Bonhams can offer an interesting pair of wedges.
Whether you really want to pay twice as much for the new version as for the original is another question.
However, only 25 examples of the new Stratos are to be built, while 492 cars of the original Stratos were ultimately produced.
The unique Miller
If you are really after absolute exclusivity, you should perhaps take a look at the Miller Shooting Brake from 1954, which bears the chassis number GPM/1/1954. GPM stands for the builder, Geoffrey Percival Miller, the "1" for the first and only vehicle and the "1954" for the year of construction.
The car is equipped with an Austin-Healey 2.9-liter engine, which was only installed in 1960. At EUR 35,000 to 40,000, the estimate is moderate if the uniqueness is taken into account.
The elegant BMW coupé from Frua
Another example of the BMW-Glas 3000 V8 Fastback Coupé from 1967 was also built. Pietro Frua created the show car, which was presented at almost all important European motor shows at the time. Technically, the coupé was based on the V8 coupé, which was initially sold by Glas as a 2.6-liter and then by BMW after the takeover as a three-liter coupé and bore the nickname "Glaserati".
The unique piece is now expected to fetch EUR 250,000 to 350,000, which could well be enough given its concours potential and uniqueness.
Better special than just classic
The offerings at the Grand Palais promise many raisins that stand out from the other line-ups of Ghibli, Miura or DB4/5/6 and co, as you usually see at major auctions.
Of course, there are also some of these super classics in the Bonhams series, such as a Maserati Bora, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL or two Jaguar E-Types. But there are also many cars that are rarely seen.
One example is the Pegaso Z-102 from 1952, which is listed in the catalog with Enasa bodywork for EUR 800,000 to 1.2 million.
You don't see a Steyr-Puch 500D TR II every day (in France) and an Alfa Romeo 1900C as a SZ-Zagato coupé from 1955 anyway (EUR 750,000 to 1 million).
A significant number of really affordable classics are also worthy of praise, from the VW Golf Cabriolet for EUR 4000 to 6000, to the Alfa Romeo GTV 2.0 from 1983 (EUR 12,000 to 18,000) and the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (R107) from 1987 for EUR 20,000 to 30,000.
Many of these cheaper cars will also go under the hammer without a reserve price, as will 24% of the entire offer. This also applies to two attractive sunny-weather Ferrari sports cars, a 308 GTS from 1979 and an F355 Spider from 1996, both available for EUR 60,000 to 80,000, or less if the demand is not there.
You can find out more about Bonhams' offer in Paris on the auction house's website.
