The Bonhams auction has been an integral part of the Goodwood Revival for many years. While the racing cars battle it out on the circuit, 90 vehicles worth £13.9 million will go under the hammer at Bonhams on September 7, 2024. On average, the cars are almost 62 years old, with the year of manufacture ranging from 1905 to 2021. Only a small proportion, namely eight percent, will be offered without a reserve price.
Sixties strongly represented
17 cars are from the pre-war period, seven have not even reached the youngtimer age (20 years). The largest segment is made up of cars from the 1960s (24) together with the more recent classics from 1970 to 2004 (also 24 cars). The post-war period up to 1959 is represented by 22 cars.
British influence
With 12 Aston Martin, 11 Jaguar, four Bentley and MG as well as two each of Austin, Bristol, Lotus and Triumph, the British suppliers are naturally dominant in terms of numbers.
The Porsche (8) and Mercedes-Benz (8, plus three predecessor brands) brands are also strongly represented.
A few exotic brands such as Amilcar, GN, Frazer Nash and Meyers Manx complete the picture.
Blue chip classics
The Bonhams range is very diverse, classic "blue chips", such as those seen everywhere in Monterey, are much less represented at Goodwood.
Exceptions include a Porsche 911 Carrera RS Touring from 1973 (£400,000 to £500,000) and an Audi Sport Quattro from 1985 (£495,000 to £595,000).
On the other hand, Lamborghini Miura, Ferrari Daytona and the like are completely missing.
On the other hand, Bonhams offers somewhat bulkier classics that are rarely found at auction.
Two special MGs
An MG K3, which even Tazio Nuvolari is said to have once driven and which won the 1933 Tourist Trophy and the 1100cc class of the 1933 Mille Miglia, is not something you can buy every day.
The supercharged car with chassis K3003 comes from the collection of Peter Briggs and is now expected to cost £700,000 to £800,000.
Hardly less prominent is an MG NE from 1934 from the same collection. The NE was basically the successor to the K3 and was built because compressor cars were no longer welcome.
The car on offer with chassis NA0520 is said to be the works car once driven by Captain George Eysteon and which took part in the 1934 Ulster Tourist Trophy. At £ 225,000 to £ 275,000, the recently restored car does not appear to be unrealistically priced.
Lotus pair
The two Lotus coupés on offer are not racing cars, but nevertheless exciting cars.
Especially the late Lotus Elite from 1962 with ZF gearbox and restoration in the nineties looks like a very attractive offer at £ 38,000 to £ 45,000.
But the recently restored Lotus Elan +2S 130 from 1973 also carries a favorable estimate of £ 18,000 to 24,000.
Bristol rarities
Only 265 examples of the four-door Bristol 405 were produced; they were closely related to the two-door Bristol 404, which came with a completely new design language.
The 1956 saloon on offer with chassis number 405/4039 and the famous BMW-derived two-liter inline six-cylinder engine is said to cost £ 35,000 to £ 55,000.
Even rarer was the Bristol 402 as a Drophead Coupé, which was once used by Hollywood celebrities. Only 20 examples were built and around 12 are believed to still exist. The professionally restored car from 1950 is expected to fetch between £100,000 and £150,000.
Many interesting cars
In fact, an interesting story could be told about almost every car on offer.
For example, we noticed the summery-looking Meyers Manx Buggy from 1966 (£ 30,000 to 40,000) and the first Triumph TR (described as a prototype) from 1967 (£ 45,000 to 55,000).
The GN 'Akela' 1,100cc 200 Mile Race from 1922 (£ 120,000 to 160,000) or the Amilcar CGS from 1925 (£ 50,000 to 60,000) also have their charms.
And then there are a whole series of early Mercedes/Benz designs from the pre-war period that are worth a closer look.
And it's not every day that five Jaguar XK derivatives come under the hammer. The two Lancia Aurelia B20 GTs from 1953 and 1954 and the Ford Escort Mexico from 1971, which once belonged to Colin Chapman, are also exciting.
As always, full information about the cars and lots of pictures can be found on the Bonhams website.
