For the 7th time, Bonhams is organizing a small but fine auction on the occasion of the Zoute Grand Prix and Concours d'Elégance. 41 cars, a motorcycle and several children's cars will go under the hammer on October 11, 2019 in Knokke-Heist (Belgium).
Top class classics
The average price of around EUR 500,000, which can be calculated from the total value of around EUR 20 million, shows that Bonhams has prepared a fine menu. On average, the vehicles are 53 years old.
Only three of the lots date from the pre-war period, the majority from the fifties or sixties, while the modern era is represented by just a handful of vehicles from the youngtimer age onwards.
Ferrari at the center
The most strongly represented brand in Knokke-Heist will be Ferrari with eight vehicles. Only Porsche (5) and Mercedes-Benz (4) will be represented with larger contingents.
Among the eight Ferraris, there are practically only super classics, starting with the 250 GT Coupé from 1960 (estimate EUR 550,000 to 750,000), the 250 GT Cabriolet from the 1960 Series 2 (EUR 1.2 to 1.6 million) and the modern F12 TdF from 2016 (EUR 650,000 to 850,000).
The 275 GTB/2 with aluminum bodywork from 1965, for which Bonhams has not communicated an estimate, is of course a real raisin.
Of course, the F40 from 1989 (EUR 800,000 to 1,000,000) and the Enzo from 2004 (EUR 1.3 to 1.6 million) are also collector's trouvailles.
The Mille Miglia OM Type 665 Superba
For those who value history and provenance and enjoy pre-war vehicles, the O.M. Tipo 665 Superba from 1930 with Zagato bodywork and supercharger is certainly worth considering.
The car took part in the Mille Miglia with Piero Dusio, the later founder of Cisitalia, as early as 1930. This means that the car is of course still guaranteed a starting place today, which puts the EUR 1.2 to 1.5 million asking price into perspective.
Driver's cars
For those who want to spend a little less and are looking for a car to drive, the Mini Moke from 1986 might be the right choice.
EUR 15,000 to 25,000 is the estimate, but the Moke is one of nine vehicles offered without a reserve price.
The AC Ace Bristol is known to be one of the best sports cars of its time. A charming example from 1958 can be purchased for EUR 250,000 to 300,000.
The Lancia Stratos is also made for real drivers. The flat wedge, built in 1974, should find a new enthusiast for EUR 350,000 to 450,000.
The Invicta 4 1/2-liter S-Type "Low Chassis" from 1931 is a real pre-war sports car. We were assured that the car drives excellently, which is not least due to the revised in-line six-cylinder engine from Meadows under the hood. EUR 0.9 to 1.1 million is being sought for the pre-war sports car.
Another driver's car is the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, which will be offered at the Zoute auction as a roadster from 1957. The estimate here is EUR 950,000 to 1.15 million.
Of course, the Shelby Cobra 289 from 1964 with chassis number CSX 2245 should not be forgotten in this list. It is expected to please a new collector's heart for EUR 800,000 to 1.1 million.
Younger classics
Not everyone wants to drive a 50 or 70-year-old car. Bonhams also has solutions for them, such as the Aston V8 Zagato Volante Convertible from 1989, which is in the catalog for EUR 320,000 to 380,000.
An alternative would be the Porsche 930 Turbo from 1976 in the rare 3-liter version, which is expected to cost EUR 100,000 to 150,000. Driving a Porsche is even cheaper with the early 928 from 1978, which should find its way into a new garage for EUR 40,000 to 60,000.
And some rarities from coachbuilders
The selection of special bodies in the Bonhams auction is relatively short, but no less interesting. The Lancia Aurelia B53 with Piin-Farina bodywork from 1952 must be mentioned here. This was almost certainly a one-off, but only a few other single-bodied B53 models have survived. Given its rarity, EUR 140,000 to 170,000 seems more than fair.
The Zagato version of the OSCA 1600 GT from 1964 is certainly worth a second look. EUR 280,000 to 340,000 is the estimate here.
For Alfa fans, the 1900C Super Sprint from 1957 with Touring Superleggera bodywork (EUR 170,000 to 230,000) should also be mentioned.
The selection that Bonhams can offer in Knokke-Heist is certainly interesting. The estimated values seem generally realistic, but we will see on October 11, 2019 whether the bidders will go along with them.
Further information and pictures of the vehicles can be found on the Bonhams website.
