This year's Goodwood Festival of Speed will take place from June 25 to 28, 2015. On June 26, Bonhams will be holding an auction to mark this major motorsport event in the south of England and will be auctioning off a very special racing car.
It is a Porsche RS-61 with chassis number 718-070 from Sir Stirling Moss.
The seller is Moss himself
The seller is "Mr. Motor Racing" himself. The successful and world-famous racing driver describes the Porsche RS 60/61 series as follows: "Simply great cars - wonderfully balanced and perfect for races like the Targa Florio with kilometers of Sicilian mountain tracks".
The agile little RennSport ('RS') cars with a powerful, air-cooled 4-cylinder engine behind the open two-seater cockpit won the Targa Florio several times.
Rediscovered love
When Moss saw a beautifully restored RS-61 in the USA a few years ago, he immediately fell in love with the car again. He bought the car and drove it at the Le Mans Classic and in the USA in his last major race before retiring.
In 1961, the Porsche was delivered from the factory to Pennsylvania and used intensively and regularly in various races in the USA by Bob Holbert and the next two owners. In total, the car recorded 13 victories and 20 podium finishes in the Sport Car Club of America championship. The car's active motorsport career ended in 1963 and it was restored six years later.
Some time ago, Andy Prill made the car race-ready again and now it will be auctioned by Bonhams at the upcoming Festival of Speed in Goodwood on June 26. Bonhams is assuming an estimated price of 1.7 to 2 million pounds, which corresponds to around 2.5 to 3 million euros and roughly the same amount in Swiss francs.
More information about the auction can be found on the Bonhams website, further information about the Festival of Speed can be found on the website of the Goodwood race track.
