The Bonhams Auction is as much a part of the Goodwood Revival as the children's pedal car race or the re-enacted Motor Show. On September 13, 2025, 78 cars with a total value of around £11 million will go under the hammer alongside automobilia and expensive license plates.
On average, the vehicles are 64 years old and only six of them will be offered without a reserve price.
Racing cars, sports cars and super classics
The three most strongly represented brands are all from the island, with Jaguar entering with 12 cars, Aston Martin with six and Bentley with five. They are followed by Ferrari and Lotus with four cars, AC, Austin-Healey and Riley with three each. The British brands are therefore very well represented, which can also be seen in the exotic cars, which include manufacturers such as Alvis, Bristol, Cooper, Costin, HRG, Lester and Piper.
Overall, the range is divided into racing cars, classic sports cars and a few tourers/limousines. There are also a few young vehicles such as a Wiesmann GT MF5 from 2011 (with just 550 km on the clock) or a Land Rover from the same year.
What immediately stands out when looking through the lots, however, are the many rare and rarely seen cars.
The bizarre
In this context, a Bristol 403 Sports Saloon from 1953 is still one of the most common vehicles.
The early two-door was estimated at £45,000 to £55,000.
The Costin-Nathan 1-Litre GT Coupé from 1966 looks much more unusual.
Trimmed for maximum streamlining and super-lightweight with a plywood monocoque, the car was supposed to cause a sensation at Le Mans, but retired after technical problems. Now £140,000 to £180,000 is expected for the racing car.
Giovanni Lurani used a 1948 Healey Elliot Sports Saloon in the 1948 Mille Miglia and managed to win the touring car class despite technical problems. He later repeated his success at the Targa Florio of the same year. In view of this palmares, the estimate of £ 60,000 to £ 80,000 does not seem exaggerated.
Visually, the most striking car at the auction in Goodwood is probably the Piper Le Mans Sports-Racing prototype from 1969, which was entered for the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1969. However, the car was excluded before the start of the race and the reasons are still being debated today. Now £120,000 to £160,000 is said to be enough to buy the rarity.
The Lester MG T51 Sports from 1955 is a car without doors. Only nine of these roadsters were built, and the car on offer is the only one without doors. Equipped with an MG TD engine, the elegant car is now expected to cost £40,000 to £50,000.
Exotic
In the 1980s, Willy König created even more expensive König Specials based on expensive super sports cars, one of which, a Ferrari 512 BBi from 1983, went under the hammer at Goodwood for just £ 100,000 to £ 150,000.
However, the coupé has not been driven for at least 10 years.
Another very rare sight is the Derby Supersport 'Surbaissé' from 1929 as a lowered racing model. It is expected to fetch £ 40,000 to £ 60,000.
Only a few of these open variants of the Abarth 750 were built by Allemano in the 1950s. Chassis 640586 is one of these Spyders and is now looking for a new owner for £ 45'000 to 55'000.
A typical British plant is the HRG Twin Cam Roadster from 1955, which wants to find a new garage for £ 60,000 to £ 80,000. Only a handful of these open-top sports cars were built.
The FMR Tg500 Tiger from 1960 is also rare, but less British. It was, so to speak, the sports car among the cabin scooters, in the case of chassis 21065 even with racing history (Eduard Ernst). Now £90,000 to £110,000 is expected to change hands in exchange for the Tiger.
And then there is one of two surviving Cisitalia 505 DF Coupés from 1953. This car was delivered new in Switzerland and is now said to be worth £140,000 to £180,000.
ennobled by famous owners
Several of the vehicles on offer can boast famous previous owners and hope to be worth a more or less hefty surcharge.
There is the Lotus Elan S3 S/E coupé from 1967, which once belonged to Jim Clark, who drove it in Paris. Accordingly, it is left-hand drive. With an estimated value of £ 200,000 to £ 220,000, chassis 36/6778 is set to exceed the usual dimensions that a closed Elan can achieve.
Tony Brooks drove the 1950 Healey Silverstone in the 1950s, which is now looking for a new owner for £95,000 to £115,000.
Robert Lawrie and Ivan Waller drove the 1951 Jaguar XK120 Competition Roadster to 11th place overall at Le Mans in 1951.
Film director and racing driver Jeff Zwart owned this early Porsche 911 from 1965, which is now for sale for between £200,000 and £250,000.
And Captain Sir Douglas Bader was the owner of the 1954 Alvis TC21/100 Drophead Coupé, now on offer for £40,000 to £60,000.
And finally, Peter Sellers' 1960 Bentley S2 Continental Drophead Coupé is to pass into the hands of another enthusiast for £100,000 to £120,00.
Of course, many super classics will also be auctioned at Goodwood, some of which have been valued surprisingly favorably. It's worth taking a look at the catalog, but you should certainly take a closer look before making an impulse purchase.
Further information and many pictures can be found on the auction house's website.
