On March 2, 2023, Bonhams will go under the hammer at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club as part of Amelia Island Week to auction off 103 cars and some automobilia.
The total value of the vehicles is almost USD 34 million, so each car is expected to fetch around USD 329,000. 53 percent of the cars will be auctioned without a reserve price.
One fifth pre-war cars
On average, the cars are almost 60 years old, but 22 are even over 80 years old, meaning they were built before the Second World War.
The oldest car to go under the hammer is a 1903 Knox Model C for USD 55,000 to 65,000, but it is only one of five pre-war cars that can be expected to fetch five-figure prices, with some of the others being considerably more expensive.
Bugatti masterpiece
The most expensive car in the auction is a Bugatti Type 57S Sports Tourer from 1937 with unique bodywork by Vanden Plas. Bonhams describes the car as a Grand Prix car in touring car guise. 3.3 liters and 200 hp were certainly a house number back then.
In 2016/2017, the car was carefully refurbished at a cost of around 1,200 hours to restore it to the same condition as when it was delivered new to New York.
The price was estimated at USD 10 to 12 million, chassis 57541 is one of only 48 Bugatti 57S built.
Porsche and Jaguar ahead of Mercedes-Benz
With 10 cars each, Porsche and Jaguar have the strongest presence at Bonhams. However, the Porsches are significantly younger than the Jags. Nine Mercedes-Benz and eight Rolls-Royce as well as six Aston Martin complete the selection of brands with over a handful of cars.
Bentley and Ferrari are on site with five cars each. In addition to the aforementioned Bugatti, Ferrari is presenting the two most valuable cars, a 1992 F40 (USD 2.9 to 3.4 million) and a 500 Superfast Series 2 from 1966 (USD 1 to 2 million), which is even being offered without a reserve price.
A special Maserati
Of the 32 Maserati 5000 GTs built, 20 were bodied by Allemano. Chassis AM103.028 is one of these rare examples and the estimate appears very low at USD 500,000 to 800,000, especially as the car is being offered without a reserve price.
However, the car seems to have suffered quite a bit over the past almost 20 years and has not been driven, which is probably why an extensive package of work is required before it can be put back on the road or used in concours.
Three Facel
Three Facel Vega are looking for a new owner at Bonhams, they are the usual suspects, namely an HK500 from 1961, a Facel II from 1963 and an Excellence from 1960.
The estimated values range between USD 80,000 and 180,000.
The Hendricks Jaguar Collection
Previously announced was the non-public collection of important Jaguar sports and racing cars that Thomas C. Hendricks had assembled for himself and which has been in hiding for the last 20 years.
The collection included one of three factory XK120s with aluminum bodywork, which was driven to victory by Phil Hill at the time. USD 400,000 to 600,000 seems quite realistic in view of this history.
Some American classics
Of course, the American bidders at Bonhams in Amelia Island can also expect to see domestic products.
In addition to three 1963, 1968 and 1990 Corvettes, there are several pre-war Americans from Cadillac, Chrysler, Packard and Pierce-Arrow as well as Stutz up for auction.
Two Skylines
Bonhams has two Nissan Skylines on offer, an R32 racing car from 1992 and an R34 GT-R Vspec N1 "Mine's Tribute" from 1999, which was estimated at an impressive USD 400,000 to 500,000.
Some super classics
Of course, the super classics are not missing either, whether it's a Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona from 1973 or a very early Porsche 356 Cabriolet from 1951.
Several eight-cylinder Astons and various Jaguar E and XK models are looking for a new owner, as is a 1964 VW Bus Samba (USD 130,000 to 180,000).
And of course there are also various Porsche 911 and Mercedes SL models.
Over a third cheaper cars
Around 40 vehicles are likely to be in the five-figure range on March 2, 2023. USD 4000 to 8000 is required for a 1949 MG TC, but this is a restoration object.
The MG NA from 1934 with a six-cylinder engine, which was estimated at USD 50,000 to 60,000, also appears to be reasonably priced.
In comparison, a Citroën 2CV Spécial from 1991 for USD 25,000 to 35,000 seems rather expensive again. An Autobianchi Bianchina Panoramica from 1967 is also on offer for the same price.
A Porsche 924 S, two Mercedes-Benz 560 SLs, a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III, a Rolls-Royce Camargue from 1982 and two rare Fiat models, namely a 1200 TV Trasformabile from 1958 and a 600 Jolly from 1962, are also expected in the five-figure range.
You can also hope to get a Lotus Esprit S4S from 1995 for USD 60,000 to 80,000 or an Aston Martin DBS from 1969 for under 100,000.
Even the Ferrari F355 from 1995 with a six-speed manual gearbox could still change hands for less than USD 100,000, especially as no minimum price is required here either.
