On the Friday before the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elégance on August 19, 2022, Bonhams invites its customers and bidders around the world to the Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel to auction 140 vehicles, including three motorcycles and a children's car.
The total value was estimated at well over USD 40 million, but almost half of the vehicles went under the hammer without a reserve price.
Almost 65 years old on average
As many as 37 cars from the years up to 1941 can be purchased at Bonhams.
The pre-war vehicles are clearly more American in character than the rest of the range.
The list of cars from 1992 onwards is much shorter, with just nine cars competing, including a BMW Z8 from 2002 and an Acura NSX from 1999.
Porsche is the most popular brand
With 22 vehicles, Porsche is at the top of the brand hit parade, followed by Mercedes-Benz (22), Alfa Romeo (11) and Jaguar (11).
Only then does the first American manufacturer follow, namely Ford with nine cars, while Ferrari is represented with eight vehicles.
The Le Mans E-Type from Team Cunningham
In 1963, Briggs Cunningham entered three Jaguar E-Types for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. One of the cars was S850664, the 7th Lightweight E-Type of 12 built. The aerodynamically designed and lightweight coupé was driven by Walt Hansgen and Augie Pabst, while Salvadori/Cihards and Grossman/Cunningham drove the other two cars.
Hansgen/Pabst retired with gearbox damage, their car was then fitted with a ZF five-speed gearbox and finished eleventh in the Road America 500 race in September 1963.
A 4th place followed a week later at the Bridgehampton race. A short time later, the car ended up in the Cunningham Museum, only to reappear in the 1970s.
The car has retained its original engine to this day. Bonhams does not officially state an estimated value for the E-Type, but it can certainly be expected to fetch a higher seven-figure sum.
The elegant Bugatti 57C Atalante
Only three Bugatti 57C Atalante with supercharger and aluminum body were built, 57767 is one of the three.
The yellow and black coupé has survived to this day largely true to the original and has been extensively documented. Bonhams gives an estimate of USD 2.8 to 3.4 million.
A Bugatti 73C monoposto from 1947 will also go under the hammer in Carmel. USD 500,000 to 700,000 is expected for the single-seater with a 16-valve four-cylinder engine.
Three early Ferrari
Two early Ferraris are expected to be just as expensive as the Bugatti Atalante. The older of the two cars is a 166 Inter Cabriolet from 1949 with chassis number 033 S and bodywork by Stabilimenti Farina.
The car has a Ferrari Classiche Red Book and is ready for the world's biggest concours. It should be worth USD 1.8 to 2.2 million to get in.
A white Ferrari 250 GT Europa with a coupé body by Pinin Farina is set to be even more expensive. Chassis 0427 GT from 1955 was shown at the 1955 Brussels Motor Show, only to race at Spa Francorchamps a short time later. The last 250 Europa GT built, which still has its original engine and sheet metal, was estimated at USD 2.25 to 2.75 million.
The Ferrari 212 Inter from 1951 is expected to be somewhat cheaper. The Ghia aluminum-clad coupé with chassis number 0145 E was shown at the 1952 Turin Motor Show and has already been shown at Pebble Beach and Amelia Island. Now USD 1.35 to 1.65 million can secure entry to the right-hand drive coupé.
Two red 300 SLs
Normally they appear in gray and silver métallic respectively, but Bonhams is offering both a roadster and a gullwing 300 SL at auction. While the "Gullwing" was valued at USD 1.4 to 1.7 million, the 1958 Roadster is expected to fetch between USD 1 and 1.3 million.
With the exception of the Gullwing and a 500 SEC, all twelve Mercedes on offer are open-top.
A truly green Lamborghini Miura
Four Lamborghinis want to be sold at Bonhams, the most valuable is clearly a Miura P400 S from 1969, which wants to be worth USD 1.75 to 2.25 million in light green paintwork, but is being sold without a minimum bid.
Significantly cheaper are a 350 GT and a 400 GT 2+2 as well as a Diablo VT from 1994.
A very special TVR offshoot
Hardly anyone knows what a Jomar is. These are sports and racing cars built by Raymond Saidel. While the Jomar Mk I was based on a Dellow chassis and a Ford four-cylinder engine, Saidel used the basis of the TVR Grantura with the Coventry Climax engine for the Mk II. The chassis number was 7C104 and the car was driven by Saidel himself in American championship races, with some success against the likes of Shelby and Co.
Now the now completely restored car is looking for a new owner who is prepared to spend USD 80,000 to 120,000 on it, but not to drive it on the road.
Incidentally, the early TVR Grantura was also called Jomar in the States, the name going back to the names of Saidel's children.
Two rather special Alfa Romeos
The example with chassis number 8513025 definitely does not look like the typical Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS. The 1930 car was used by Sir Ronald Stewart and Capt. George Eyston and was used in record-breaking races at Brooklands, among others.
Restored, this car is now expected to cost USD 1.6 to 1.8 million.
The Alfa Romeo 33 TT 12 from 1974 was also used for racing, a works car that was driven by Ickx, Reutemann and Stommelen in Monza, on the Nürburgring and in Imola, with good results.
Now the authentically preserved and never restored example is expected to fetch around USD 1.7 to 2.2 million from the buyer.
A whole horde of early Porsche 911s
Bonhams is selling no fewer than eight early 911 Coupés from 1966 to 1974 in California. Among them are six two-liter coupés.
These are joined by a 912 and a 2.4 T as well as an early 2.7 liter Carrera Coupé from the G-series. The 356 is also well represented, including two Speedsters.
With the exception of a Cayman, the other Porsche vehicles are also 911 derivatives.
Humphrey Bogart's Thunderbird
The star of Casablanca, Humphrey Bogart, bought a gray Ford Thunderbird with Continental kit in 1956. The car still comes with the original registration card and is in well-preserved and authentic condition, including a hardtop with opera window.
Estimated at USD 75,000 to 125,000 and without a reserve price.
Significantly more credit seems to be given to the name Steve McQueen. After all, the 1971 Husqvarna 400 Cross that once belonged to the "King of Cool" was estimated at USD 130,000 to 180,000. Let's see ...
Less exotic cars too
However, you don't necessarily have to have six-figure sums in your bank account to get your money's worth at Bonhams on August 19, 2022.
A Citroën ID20 Familiale from 1969 was estimated at USD 40,000 to 70,000, a BMW 2002 Tii is expected to cost USD 40,000 to 50,000.
An Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV from 1971 can be bought at auction for USD 50,000 to 60,000, a Giulia Super from 1967 for USD 25,000 to 35,000.
Cars for restorers
Bonhams even has something to offer for people who still want to work on their car themselves.
For example, there is a Facel Vega Excellence or an early Jaguar E-Type for sale, which will certainly not run without help, but are still not cheap.
Even electric
There is also an electric car, a Detroit Electric Model 47 Brougham from 1914, which should be able to travel up to 100 km on 16 six-volt batteries.
The gray car has been restored and is now expected to cost USD 30,000 to 40,000, with no reserve price.
Further information on the individual vehicles and many pictures can be found on the Bonhams website.
