On August 13, 2026, the Bonhams auction, held as part of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elégance, will take place for the first time at the Laguna Seca Raceway. A total of 57 vehicles with a combined value of approximately USD 19.6 million will be offered. This works out to approximately USD 343,000 per lot (53 cars and four motorcycles).
A Diverse Selection
The auction catalog features around three dozen manufacturers. Jaguar has the strongest presence with six cars, followed by Ferrari with four (including a Dino) and Mercedes-Benz, also with four cars. Ford is represented by four vehicles, and three cars from Porsche will go under the hammer.
All other brands, including rare ones such as Bancroft, Delahaye, and Rauch & Lang, are represented in the catalog by a maximum of two vehicles, though most have only one.
Eight Pre-War Vehicles
No fewer than eight cars were built before the end of World War II, including a 1903 Thomas Model 18 “King of Belgium” Touring (USD 250,000 to 300,000).
The most expensive pre-war car is a 1936 Cord E-300 “Experimental Disappearing Top Cabriolet,” essentially the prototype for a successor to the Duesenberg Model J. The body was built by LeBaron. Apparently, this car has never been shown at a major concours, which certainly makes it particularly appealing. However, it is expected to fetch between USD 650,000 and 850,000.
The second-most-expensive pre-war vehicle is expected to be a 1934 Packard Twelve Model 1108, with an estimated price of USD 450,000 to 550,000.
A Dozen Race Cars
At over 20%, the proportion of race cars is high, which makes perfect sense given the venue.
Among the offerings is, for example, a 1966 Lola T70 Mk II CanAm Racing Spyder, once driven by Dan Gurney and the only CanAm winner powered by a Ford engine. However, with a price tag of USD 1.1 to 1.5 million, you’ll need deep pockets to make the purchase, and online bidding is not allowed.
Slightly more affordable are the former sports car rivals, the 1956 Louts Eleven Le Mans and the 1959–60 Lola Mk1 Sports Car. They are estimated at USD 120,000 to 160,000 and USD 225,000 to 255,000, respectively.
For USD 400,000 to 500,000, you can buy a 2000 BMW M3 E46 in race trim, and for USD 625,000 to 825,000, the 2019 Toro Rosso-Honda TR19 F1 car, in which Pierre Gasly finished second at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix.
And then there’s the 1967 Vollstedt-Ford, an Indy single-seater that brought success to drivers such as Jim Clark, Cale Yarborough, Gordon Joncock, George Follmer, and even Chris Amon. The Monoposto is expected to change hands for between USD 750,000 and 1.25 million.
Young and Expensive Supercars
The two cars with the highest appraised values are comparatively young supercars.
First, there’s the 2000 Lamborghini Diablo GT, a car of which only 80 were produced. This rare late-model Diablo is now expected to fetch between USD 2.1 and 2.6 million.
The 2024 Bugatti Chiron Super Sport is expected to fetch an even higher price. Only about 80 of this model were built, and the vehicle being offered has just 1,325 miles on the odometer. It is expected to fetch between USD 4.3 and 4.8 million.
Exceptional Vehicles
In addition to super-expensive and very fast cars, Bonhams also features vehicles that are a bit outside the usual auction offerings.
One example is a 1952 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith. What makes it special is its long wheelbase and the fact that it is one of only a few cars to have been bodied by Park Ward with this design (No. 408). A price range of USD 40,000 to 60,000 seems like a moderate asking price for it.
Hardly anyone knows the race car driver and designer Hugh Bancroft today, but in the early 1990s, he designed a sports car with a style that harked back to the 1930s. A limited run of 300 units was planned, but only ten were actually built, selling at the time for around DM 300,000 to 400,000. The Mercedes-Benz V8 engine, with a displacement of 4,973 cm³, is said to produce about 322 PS and is connected to the rear axle via a four-speed automatic transmission. Today, a price of USD 65,000 to 75,000 is reportedly enough to purchase one.
For “speed nerds,” the 1960 Flying Caduceus Jet-Powered Land Speed Record Car might be just the thing. Powered by a GE engine with approximately 6,930 PS, the rocket car reached nearly 360 MPH in 1963 and is now reportedly up for sale for USD 70,000 to 90,000 to a daring new owner.
While the usual super classics—with the exception of a Jaguar XK120, a 1955 Porsche 356, a 1958 Lancia Aurelia B20S GT, or the 1968 Maserati Ghibli 4.7 that once belonged to Hugh Hefner, are rather few and far between, the Bonhams lineup delights with some exciting cars, including various American vehicles that are rarely seen.
