On December 6, 2015, the already well-established annual auction at Bonhams on New Bond Street will take place from 14:30. 27 cars will go under the hammer alongside several Automobila, with the total value of the vehicles amounting to around EUR 15.4 million or CHF 16.5 million. The Bonhams experts expect each car to sell for around EUR 570,000 or CHF 613,000. Small but mighty, that's the motto, and the auction catalog does indeed contain rarities and specialties that you can't buy every day.
Two rare four-door cars from Aston Martin
Four-door cars are not among the most famous products of the British manufacturer Aston Martin and collectors usually prefer a DB4 or DB6 to a Lagonda Rapide or an Aston Martin Lagonda Series 1 Saloon. However, this does not stop the Bonhams specialists from setting mid-six-figure sums for both cars.
The rarity of the two four-door cars actually justifies high prices, as the Aston Martin Lagonda Rapide 4.2 Liter from 1963 is one of only 55 such saloons, while the Aston Martin Lagonda Series 1 from 1974 is one of eight such vehicles and also the London Motor Show exhibition car.
Both are presented in completely restored condition, for which Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd. itself is responsible for, but whether this justifies Euro 500,000 to 570,000 (CHF 530,000 to 610,000) for the older one and Euro 570,000 to 710,000 (CHF 610,000 to 760,000) will be revealed on December 6, 2015.
Frazer Nash jewels
Almost as rare as the two Lagonda saloons are the sporty two-seaters from the Frazer Nash brand.
The Frazer Nash TT Replica from 1932 is not something of a replica car, as the name would suggest, but an original Frazer Nash brand car, which is simply a replica of the 1931 Tourist Trophy competitor car. It was used as a works racing car and has been completely restored. Euro 350'000 to
420,000 (CHF 380,000 to 460,000) are expected.
The Frazer Nash BMW 328 Roadster from 1938, which is one of the 426 original BMW 328s built, is thought to be significantly more valuable, except that it was imported by Frazer Nash at the time. In line with the high BMW 328 prices, Bonhams estimates a value of between 780,000 and 920,000 euros (CHF 840,000 and 990,000).
The Frazer Nash Le Mans Coupé from 1955, one of eight production examples with an aluminum body and Bristol inline six-cylinder engine, is rarer but still somewhat less expensive. According to Bonhams, the restored car is worth 540,000 to 590,000 euros (CHF 580,000 to 640,000).
The "Pièce de Résistence"
The Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa from 1958 with its white body and blue vertical stripes is sure to be a real eye-catcher.
Except that it is not an original Testa Rossa, but a creation of the company DK Engineering, which, on the occasion of the restoration of an original Testa Rossa, built a copy on the chassis of a 250 GT Ellena Coupé chassis (0803 GT), so to speak, which certainly comes close to the original. The brand experts and lawyers at Ferrari will probably decide for themselves whether the car rightly bears the Ferrari name, but the car certainly looks fantastic and at Euro 710,000 to 850,000 (CHF 760,000 to 920,000), the DK version is certainly considerably cheaper than an original. What's more, you still have the value of the 250 GT chassis used.
Two special Austin-Healeys
Bonhams has repeatedly sold special Austin-Healeys over the past few years, primarily vehicles from the 100S series. Now, with the Austin-Healey 100/100S Coupé from 1953, a perhaps even more special sports car from Donald Healey's company is coming under the hammer, so special that not even an estimated value has been publicly communicated.
Chassis BN1 142615 was Donald's personal car, one of only two coupés ever built in this form. With Dunlop disc brakes and 100S mechanics, these cars were particularly advanced. And visually, the car certainly looks elegant.
Chassis "H-BN7/1342" (license plate "SMO 746") is likely to be available at a significantly lower price on December 6, 2015, although this is a 3000 Mk 1 from the works team, which took part in the 1959 Alpine Rally with Jack Sears and Sam Moore, among others. In private ownership, the Healey was subsequently modified to remain competitive in motorsport until the 1970s. The car is now said to be worth between 200,000 and 280,000 euros (CHF 210,000 to 310,000) to its new owner.
Super and neo classics
Naturally, the Bond Street auction catalog also includes some of the super classics such as the AC Cobra, Aston Martin DB4/DB5, Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing and Ferrari 330 GTC, all of which are offered at the usual price level at auctions today.
They are complemented by a number of modern cars that are set to become early classics, such as a Ferrari 575 Superamerica Convertible from 2005, a Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina from 2002 and a McLaren MP4-12C Coupé from 2012. But who knows, maybe now would be the right time to get in on these neo-classics?
Further information and many pictures of the individual cars can be found on the Bonhams website.
