This year, BMW Group Classic is already traveling to the south of England in mid-April. To mark various anniversaries, it is bringing the legendary Brabham BT52 Formula 1 racing car to the Members' Meeting in Goodwood to drive a few demonstration laps. David Brabham, son of three-time Formula 1 world champion and team founder Sir Jack Brabham, has been recruited to drive the car.
1983 was a very special year for the BMW brand: Brazilian Nelson Piquet became the first driver in the history of Formula 1 to win the Formula 1 World Championship in a Brabham-BMW with a turbo engine. Just 630 days after BMW became the engine supplier for the British Brabham team, the sensation was perfect and a milestone in BMW motorsport was set.
The potential of the Brabham BT52 was demonstrated as early as the spring of 1983 during popular test drives at the Goodwood Motor Circuit. Nelson Piquet set an absolute lap record here. For the first time, the race track was mastered in under a minute. To this day, this lap is considered the best ever driven at Goodwood.
The motorsport era at Goodwood began 75 years ago. This year's 80th Goodwood Members' Meeting therefore marks another anniversary and celebrates "75 years of motorsport at Goodwood".
