Silver cars for the silver jubilee: From July 12 to 15, the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the world's largest event for historic motorsport, will be celebrating its 25th edition. In keeping with the anniversary, Audi Tradition is taking part with two silver cars from its more than 100-year history. The Auto Union Type C racing car from 1936 and a Wanderer Stromlinie Spezial from 1939 will be on the starting line.
Auto Union Type C
The Auto Union Type C is an old acquaintance to the 200,000 visitors expected at Goodwood. This is because the model's appearances have always been a highlight at the Festival of Speed. With 16 cylinders, 520 hp, a top speed of 340 km/h and the engine mounted behind the driver, the racing car was considered a futuristic marvel when it was unveiled in 1936.
In the same year, Bernd Rosemeyer won the European, German road and mountain championships in this Silver Arrow. This year, Hans-Joachim Stuck will be behind the wheel of the original Type C replica from Audi Tradition. A very special moment for the former Audi Sport driver: Stuck's father Hans was a member of the Auto Union racing team in the 1930s and was virtually unbeatable in hill climbs. Stuck Junior will be wearing his father's original gloves and racing goggles at Goodwood, as he always does when driving a Silver Arrow.
Wanderer Streamline Special
Audi Tradition is also sending a jubilarian to the starting grid: the Wanderer Stromlinie Spezial will be making its debut at Goodwood. 80 years ago, Auto Union AG entered three of these models for the most difficult rally in the world at the time, Liège-Rome-Liège. The car had to cover at least 50 kilometers per hour on the approximately 4000-kilometer route. During this 100-hour race, the drivers almost only stopped to refuel. The highest demands on drivers and equipment took their toll: in 1938, just a third of the cars that started reached the finish line; in 1939, only 21 out of 51 did. Among them were the three Wanderer Stromlinie Spezial cars from Auto Union. The company thus won the most important award for works teams, the brand classification.
