Artcurial is organizing an auction in the south of France on 29 June 2024 under the title "Garden Party in Saint-Tropez". On offer will be 100 cars, a boat and some Michael Schumacher-related automobilia.
The cars have been estimated at over EUR 21 million, meaning that around EUR 209,000 is expected per car. 29% of the vehicles will go under the hammer without a reserve price.
Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari and Porsche
With 24 cars, Mercedes-Benz has the largest contingent of cars, which are on average 28 years old. It is followed by Ferrari with 20 cars (30 years old on average) and Porsche with eight cars (29 years old on average).
The five Alfa Romeos on offer are also relatively young at 30 years old, while the five Ford lots are on average 49 years old. Apart from that, only Aston Martin (4), Bentley (3), BMW (3) and Lancia (3) have more than two vehicles at the start.
Really exotic manufacturers are missing, apart from Siata or Facel Vega.
Young cars
As already mentioned, the vehicles are relatively young with an average age of 36 years.
There are no pre-war cars at all, but more than a third of the cars were only built in the new millennium.
Extensive SL selection
Anyone with a passion for the various generations of Mercedes-Benz SLs will find a large selection of vehicles in Saint-Tropez.
From the 300 SL Roadster from 1958 to the 190 SL, the Pagoda 280 SL, the R107 as 500 SL and R129 in various AMG versions, everything is available.
There is also an open-top SL63 from 2015 and an AMG GT C Roadster from 2017.
Coupé or convertible?
It is quite rare for both the cabriolet and coupé versions of a rare car to be on sale at the same auction. At Artcurial in the south of France, this happens several times.
The Bentley S3 Continental from 1963 is available in both open and closed versions.
The Coupé and Spider versions of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione are also up for auction.
And finally, you also have to decide between two coupés from 2005/2006 and a roadster from 2007 for the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, whereby the estimates are given at a similar level in all cases.
Incidentally, the Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG from 2006 is only available as a convertible.
One of five
The Ferrari California of the new millennium is not exactly one of the favorites of Ferrari collectors. However, Artcurial can offer a very special example, namely one of the five cars with manual transmission. In fact, it is said to be the last Ferrari ever to be equipped with a manual gearbox. This probably explains the estimated value of EUR 300,000 to 450,000.
It should be noted that the same car was already offered by Artcurial at the Rétromobile auction in 2016 and apparently sold (subsequently). The estimate at the time was EUR 400,000 to 600,000, with the highest bid coming in at EUR 330,000. It will be interesting to see how great the euphoria will be on June 29.
Two Facel Vega
Of course, French specialties are a must at Artcurial.
For example, you can bid on a Citroën Méhari 4x4 from 1980 or a Renault 25 V6 from 1991 as a special model for the 1992 Winter Olympics.
The elegant and fast coupés from Facel Vega are even available in two versions in the south of France, namely the FV4 from 1967 and the Facel II from 1963.
The two Facels fit in well with the extensive range of super classics, which also includes an Aston Martin DB4 from 1959, an Alpine A110 1600 SC from 1974, various Ferraris and the Lancia Aurelia as a Spider America and as a convertible.
Quite exotic
The majority of the cars on offer are well-known vehicle types, but there are also some cars in Saint-Tropez that you don't see every day at auctions.
Examples include the Siata Spring 850 from 1968, the Rover 114 GTI from 1992 and the Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ from 1965, which is not yet the most expensive car in the auction at EUR 700,000 to 1 million. That honor goes to the Porsche 918 Spyder from 2015 (EUR 1.25 to 1.5 million).
