Artcurial has been organizing the official Rétromobile auction for many, many years and on Friday, February 2, 2024, the French auction house will once again line up at the Porte de Versailles in the halls of the classic car fair to auction 131 cars, while motorcycles and other rare items will go under the hammer on Saturday.
The vehicles will also be on display in the hall at the classic car show so that they can be inspected before the auction.
In total, the 131 cars are estimated at EUR 51.8 million, meaning that each car is expected to fetch EUR 396,000. 43 percent of the vehicles will go under the hammer without a reserve price.
Ferrari ahead of Porsche and Lamborghini
15 Ferrari (plus one Dino), 13 Porsche and 10 Lamborghini dominate the list of brands, followed by Citroën (8), BMW and Mercedes-Benz (7 each) as well as Rolls-Royce (6) and Bugatti (5).
At the other end of the spectrum are some exotic and long-forgotten manufacturers such as Amédée Bolée, De Dion-Boutin, Delauney-Belleville, HRG, Peerless, René Bonnet and Salmson, to name just a few examples.
20 pre-war cars
As many as 15 percent of the cars in the auction belong to the pre-war period, including the Benz three-wheeler replica from 1886.
The oldest car on the lot list is a De Dion-Bouton tricycle from 1897, followed by a Bobrie "Torpille" from 1909.
The pre-war vehicles also include a Bugatti 35 Grand Prix from 1925 (by Gilles Fournier), a Bugatti 57 Galibier from 1934, a Rolls-Royce Phantom II from 1930, two Avion-Voisin and a Hispano-Suiza Junior Berline van Vooren from 1933.
Two BMW 327/328s and a Jaguar SS 100 2 1/2 Litre are also among the cars built before 1940.
California Spyder as the star of the show
A Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder LWB from 1958 was announced as the most expensive car, estimated at EUR 8.5 to 11.5 million.
This is the 10th of 47 models built with chassis 1011GT and Ferrari Classiche certification, equipped with Swiss papers.
The second and third most expensive cars in the auction are McLaren Speedtail (2002) and Lamborghini Sián (2021) hypercars in mint condition.
Three more Ferraris complete the top 6, followed by a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster from 1962 (EUR 1.2 to 1.4 million)
The fast Alfa Romeo 33 TT12
The Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 TT12 racing car prototype from 1975, the last evolution of the Tipo 33 that won the world championship in 1975, is expected to cost around EUR 1.2 to 1.6 million.
The racing car on offer took two victories in the Interseries with Derek Bell and Jochen Mass at the wheel.
Two BMW M1s
Only rarely are two BMW M1s offered at the same auction.
Artcurial is interested in a white road M1 from 1979, which is expected to cost EUR 500,000 to 600,000, as well as a Procar racing car, which was subsequently converted from a road car and took part in the IMSA Championship in the USA from 1983 to 1986.
EUR 1 to 1.2 million is expected for the racing car.
French rarities
Of course, there is no shortage of French rarities at Artcurial.
Two Talbot Lago cars are on offer, for example, the T14 America from 1955 with a BMW V8 engine is a car that was once driven by Richard von Frankenberg and is now worth EUR 160,000 to 200,000. Even more exclusive is the T26 GSL from 1954, which was estimated at EUR 200,000 to 260,000.
The Salmson GS 8 Grand Sport from 1929, which is listed at EUR 120,000 to 180,000, is certainly also of interest.
Two Avion Voisin C14s will be competing for the bidders' favor, as well as five Bugatti cars, an Amédée Bollée Type F from 1914 and a group of Citroën cars, including a 2 CV Sahara from 1962 and two open-top goddesses as DS 19 and DS 21 ie.
There are also three Delahaye 135s up for auction in the EUR 60,000 to 150,000 price range.
And then there is an Alpine A110 S from 1970 with Group 4 livery and a René Bonnet Djet III from 1964, one of the earliest mid-engined sports cars ever built.
And for lovers of younger French cars, the Peugeot 205 GTI 1.6 from 1984 might still be an option.
Many super classics
Of course, there is no shortage of super classics in Paris, with more than half of the cars on offer in this segment.
In addition to the cars already mentioned, we also noticed a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing from 1955, several Porsche 356s, a Maserati Mistral Spyder, a Maserati Ghibli, two Isos, an Aston Martin DB6 and an interesting selection of Lamborghinis, ranging from the 350 GT to the Diabos SV and Aventador from 2022.
Diversity in the lower price range
Not quite half of the cars are expected to fetch surcharges in the five-digit range, either because they have been valued accordingly or because they are being offered without a reserve price.
Among them are former bread-and-butter cars such as the Citroën Am6 from 1962, but also exotics such as a Peerless GT from 1958 or an early Volvo P1800 from Jensen production. But even a Fiat Dino Coupé from 1967 or a Porsche 911 SC 3.0 Targa from 1983 could still be available for less than EUR 50,000.
The selection is extensive and despite the overall high average value of the cars, there are also many affordable classics outside the norm up for auction. A visit to Paris could therefore be well worthwhile.
Further information and many pictures of the vehicles can be found on the Artcurial website.
