Every autumn, Artcurial organizes an auction near the Champs-Elysées in Paris. On Sunday, October 16, 2022, the time has come again. 81 cars and some automobilia will go under the hammer. The 81 cars are worth almost EUR 9 million. This means that EUR 110,593 is expected per car. On average, the vehicles are 45 years old and 32 percent of them will go under the hammer without a reserve price.
28 brands
It is to be expected that the French brands will be well represented in Paris. With Renault (8) and Citroën (6), they are also among the most strongly represented car manufacturers. However, there are also six Ferraris (including one Dino) and five each from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.
Among the rest, there are other French brands such as Delage, Peugeot, Matra and Talbot-Lago.
Green or red?
It is no coincidence that the two most valuable vehicles in the auction come from Sant'Agata and Maranello. While the red Lamborghini Miura P400S from 1969 is expected to fetch around EUR 900,000 to 1.4 million, the green Ferrari Daytona 365 GTB/4 from 1974 is estimated at EUR 650,000 to 850,000.
Other expensive offerings in Paris also come from the same brands, such as a Dino 246 GTS from 1973, a Ferrari 512M from 1996 or a Lamborghini Murciélago Roadster from 2005 (with manual transmission).
There is no shortage of Italian hot hatches anyway, as a Maserati Ghibli 4.7 from 1969 (EUR 160,000 to 220,000), a Maserati Khamsin from 1975 (EUR 120,000 to 160,000) and a Lamborghini Espada 400 GT Series 3 from 1975 (EUR 100,000 to 150,000) will also be vying for the bidding public's favor.
Open or closed?
But it doesn't have to be the color by which you choose a car. The body type can also make the difference. There is a choice of four Jaguar E-Types, three of which are from the popular first series.
Bidders have the choice between a 3.8-litre coupé from 1963 and two roadsters from 1964 and 1965. For 12-cylinder enthusiasts, there is an E-Type from 1973. The estimates are all under 150,000 euros.
French exotics
It goes without saying that you can also expect to find some French rarities at Artcurial. The selection is definitely interesting. For example, a 1948 Delage D6 3L Cabriolet Milord Chapron is being offered for EUR 100,000 to 150,000.
Two special Renault Frégate are in the running for Francophile bidders.
While the Chapron Cabriolet from 1959 is tempting for an immediate drive for EUR 80,000 to 120,000, the prototype from 1957, in which Renault tested the use of plastic parts on the Frégate to reduce the vehicle weight, is more likely to be something for real enthusiasts. The 1957 prototype, in which Renault tested the use of plastic parts on the Frégate to reduce the vehicle's weight, is more likely to be something for real enthusiasts who want to invest some more work and money after the initial investment of EUR 10,000 to 20,000 or who want to display the car as a stationary exhibit.
The same applies even more to the Talbot Lago Baby T15 LB Guilloré from 1950, which once sold for EUR 36,000 at the famous Baillon barn find auction in 2016 and has now been estimated at EUR 15,000 to 25,000.
The two cars from the Matra factory are also likely to be quite rare. On offer are a Matra 530 from 1972 (EUR 20,000 to 30,000) and a Renault Avantime V6 from 2003 (EUR 20,000 to 35,000).
Unusual and therefore interesting
With the Iso Isetta from 1959, Artcurial can offer the "father" of the BMW Isetta.
The cabin scooter was estimated at EUR 15,000 to 20,000.
However, one of the rare Fiat 131 Abarths from 1976 would go much faster. The car is one of only four examples delivered to France and was even driven by Jean-Claude Andruet at the time. However, the estimated value of EUR 160,000 to 200,000 does not make the car a bargain either.
If you want a Fiat and have less money to spend, you should perhaps consider the Panda 4x4 from 1992 (EUR 10,000 to 15,000) or the elegant 2300 S Coupé from 1964 (EUR 30,000 to 50,000).
From France itself comes the Peugeot 205 GTI Griffe from 1990, which is offered for EUR 30,000 to 40,000 and would certainly make a strong opponent for the VW Golf 16 s Oettinger from 1983, which is listed in the catalog at EUR 45,000 to 55,000.
From Germany comes the NSU Prinz 4L from 1969, which is probably even rarer in France than in the country of manufacture. EUR 8000 to 12,000 is the estimate here.
Much newer is the MG R V8 from 1996, the later successor to the MGB with Rover V8 engine. You can become an owner here for EUR 35,000 to 45,000.
Two Lotus Cortina from 1964 and 1965 represent both series of the first Ford Lotus Cortina. The older model is a racing car, the slightly younger car is a left-hand drive road car in the classic white and green livery (EUR 45,000 to 65,000.
And then there's another French curiosity to look out for. For sale in Paris is a Lancia Ardennes from 1937, which is simply the French version of the Lancia Aprilia, made with 90 percent parts manufactured in France. Completely restored for EUR 50,000, the car is now expected to fetch EUR 40,000 to 60,000.
It is definitely worth taking a look at the extensively illustrated catalog with descriptions in English and French. The catalog can of course be found on the Artcurial website.
