Richard Romagny is a doer, as he proved in his job, developing the company "Forges et Mécaniques de la Loire" from 18 to 400 people between 1992 and 2006. In the nineties, he discovered his love of long-distance 4x4 rallies and took part in the Paris-Dakar Rally three times himself, alone, without a co-driver.
After selling his company in 2006, Romagny began collecting the cars that had shaped his childhood and youth, including the vehicles driven by his father as well as his own first car (a Simca 1100 ti). He then added many interesting French cars from the sixties to the nineties, as well as a few other rarities on two and four wheels.
The collection grew to around 150 vehicles, and Romagny is now parting with a good three quarters of them. According to Artcurial, most of the cars are in good, well-maintained condition and the collector drove them regularly.
Whenever possible, he also looked for complete histories, low mileages and special design variants when buying.
Citroën, Peugeot and Renault
90 cars from the so-called "French Collection" will go under the hammer online between November 4 and 22, 2021. Citroën (37 vehicles), Peugeot (24) and Renault (13) make up the bulk of the offer. There are also other French brands. However, there are also a few selected German and American vehicles, as well as one British and one Japanese vehicle.
The Citroëns are on average 40 years old, the Peugeots 42 and the Renaults 35. Overall, the annual average is 42 years.
All cars together were estimated at EUR 1.944 million, so EUR 21,600 per car is expected. 76 percent of the vehicles are offered without a reserve price, but it would be surprising if many of these special cars were to remain below the lower estimate.
The Dakar Toyota
The 1998 Toyota Land Cruiser is Romagny's entry vehicle for the 35th Paris-Dakar Rally. The four-wheeler was built specifically for this purpose and took part in the rally twice. In 1999, Romagny came third with it.
EUR 70,000 to 130,000 are now due for the operational rally car.
The special Voisin
International buyers should read the small print carefully, as the Voisin C3 C "Queen Alexandra" from 1922 is a French listed building and cannot be exported. The four-door car is the first Voisin with front brakes and once belonged to Yvonne Marrel.
Now it is to find a new owner for EUR 50,000 to 70,000.
Mainly hydropneumatic Citroëns
The 37 Citroëns include around two dozen cars with hydropneumatic suspension of the ID/DS, CX, GS, BX and SM types. They come in many different and often rare versions.
But you can also bid for an LNA from 1980, a 2CV from 1988, a Traction 15-Six H from 1955 or a Xantia from 1999.
The classics from Peugeot
The selection of Peugeot passenger cars is also interesting. The 205 model is particularly well represented (including the sought-after GTI 1.6 variant), but almost all saloons from the sixties to the eighties will also go under the hammer, i.e. 304, 404, 405, 504, 505 and 604.
There are also two variants of the 203 and a 403 as a panel van, as well as the 404 and 504 coupés.
Renault 5 parade
Three Renault 5s and a further three Super Cinqs are auctioned, including an early 5 TL from 1974 and a Super 5 GT Turbo from 1985.
The Renault group is complemented by an R17 Coupé TL from 1971, a 16 TX and an R4 GTL from 1988.
Five Mercedes-Benz
A Mercedes-Benz 190 SL from 1959 is the most expensive car in the auction. It was estimated at EUR 100,000 to 130,000.
Slightly cheaper is a Pagoda as a 280 SL from 1968 (EUR 60,000 to 80,000), while a 190 limousine from 1963 and the S600L V12 from 1991 are expected to sell for EUR 15,000 to 25,000 each.
The 1998 BMW Z3 on offer occupies a special position in the range, as Romagny bought this car when it was new and has kept it to this day. With only 16,634 km on the clock, the silver car with black interior is an interesting offer with an estimate of EUR 15,000 to 25,000.
And then there is a rather special VW Beetle from 1970, which could certainly provide a lot of driving pleasure with a 1.8-liter engine.
