Sometimes your dreams are bigger than your wallet. In such cases, it can help to at least own the model instead of the original. With the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 B Touring Coupé from 1938, the model car manufacturer CMC has presented a jewel that cannot replace the original, but comes very, very close.
The 1:18 scale gem shines with detailed windshield wipers and frames, intricate lettering and perfectly positioned headlights. The interior scores points with impeccable instrument details such as the magnificent Veglia round clocks. A desirable feast for the eyes for any Alfa Romeo collection.
The original Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 had an 8-cylinder in-line engine with two overhead camshafts and two twin Roots superchargers. From 2905 cc, it produced 220 hp at 5300 rpm, which was enough for a top speed of 230 km/h in 1939. Only six examples were built, and the surviving vehicles are correspondingly rare and expensive.
The Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Coupé from 1938 combined the engine of the Grand Prix racing car from 1935 with an extremely attractive coupé body. The astonishing 220 hp and a top speed of 230 km/h for the time were the result of forced induction by means of superchargers. The Alfa 8C 2900 B was originally designed as a two-seater racing spider for the Italian Mille Miglia road race. With a Berlinetta body designed by Touring, the Mille Miglia-winning model was converted for the major endurance races of the 1938 season. Raymond Sommer and Clemente Biondetti took a commanding lead in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but had to retire shortly before the finish with valve damage.
A few weeks later, Carlo Maria Pintacuda and Francesco Severi won the 24-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. These were to remain the only endurance races for the Alfa 8C 2900 B. This historic Alfa Romeo racing car with its Superleggera bodywork by Touring perhaps best embodies the epitome of a driving sculpture.
