In keeping with the season, the brand is celebrating a special anniversary: at the new San José Chiapa plant, the eight millionth Audi with quattro drive - the technology with built-in safety and driving pleasure even in snow and ice - rolls off the production line. The anniversary car is a garnet red Audi Q5 2.0 TFSI quattro*.
quattro technology made its debut in 1980 and is now available in more than 100 model variants.
Success story: the quattro history
With quattro permanent all-wheel drive, Audi has achieved a milestone in automotive history - in 1980, no other manufacturer had a high-speed, lightweight all-wheel drive system to offer for large series.
The technology made its debut in 1980 at the Geneva Motor Show in the so-called Ur-quattro.
In 1986, Audi replaced the manually lockable center differential of the first generation with the Torsen differential, which was able to distribute the drive torques variably, followed in 2005 by the planetary gearbox with asymmetric-dynamic basic distribution of forces. To this day, the self-locking center differentials are being continuously developed at Audi and are regarded as the benchmark for traction and driving dynamics with a very low weight.
Also successful in racing
Audi also celebrated numerous triumphs in motorsport with quattro technology. The tally up to that point: four titles in the World Rally Championship, six victories in the famous hill climb at Pikes Peak (USA), one title win in the US TransAm series, two DTM titles, eleven national super touring car championships and one World Touring Car Cup.
