The Toyota Land Cruiser is celebrating a very special anniversary: the robust all-rounder will be 70 years old on August 1, 2021. The off-road vehicle was launched on August 1, 1951 under the name Toyota "Jeep BJ" and has now been rolling off the production line in various generations for 70 years. The ten millionth Land Cruiser was already celebrated in 2019.
Success type
Reliable, robust and seemingly unstoppable: this reputation has made the Land Cruiser a global bestseller. With the 20 series, which went on export in November 1955, the model conquered the world. While not even 100 units were initially exported each year, this figure rose to more than 10,000 units annually within ten years.
Toyota has successively developed its flagship without neglecting customer requirements for durability and maximum drivability even on poor roads. The Land Cruiser is now sold in around 170 countries and regions, with annual sales of around 400,000 vehicles.
High standards of quality, durability and reliability
The Land Cruiser perfectly embodies Toyota's claim to quality, durability and reliability and has thus contributed significantly to the brand image. In some regions, Land Cruisers from the 40 series are still on the road - some 50 years after their production.
The Land Cruiser is a reliable companion for everyday life and work and makes mobility dreams come true: people can seemingly go anywhere with the vehicle - and also return safely and easily.
In action in difficult situations
And this is also reflected in its wide range of applications. In Africa, for example, the Land Cruiser provides humanitarian aid: In Burundi, it brings children infected with malaria to hospital, and in Uganda, patients from refugee camps to clinics. In Australia, on the other hand, the Land Cruiser is on the move in zinc and copper mines at a depth of around 1600 meters and on huge cattle farms that can quickly cover 8,000 square kilometers.
In Costa Rica, the Land Cruiser helps in some regions to harvest carrots at altitudes of 3,500 meters - on slopes so steep that even people can barely stand. The reason for using the Land Cruiser is relatively simple: only the Toyota all-rounder is able to reach these fields.
Unique
In order to continue to meet and even exceed customer expectations, the (further) development of the Land Cruiser is based on the premise that it can be used in every corner of the world. Toyota sets itself strict standards to create a truly unique car.
