The memorial hill climb in Steckborn is at the top of the calendar for classic car fans. In 2023, 345 classic cars will tackle the 2.8-kilometre memorial route - from the Lake Constance community of Steckborn over the Seerücken on Frauenfelderstrasse in the direction of Hörhausen - in memory of the hill climb, which was held for the first time in 1955.
Claude Schönherr, President of the Hill Climb Association, is delighted with the great demand: "This year, our event offers the perfect mix of nostalgia and innovation. We hope to be able to share our enthusiasm for classic vehicles and motorsport with as many visitors as possible." Around 8,000 visitors are expected to attend the 5th Memorial.
Synfuel as fuel
The 2023 Memorial Hill Climb is innovative because, for the first time, a large number of the historic vehicles will be running on synfuel, a synthetic fuel produced from renewable energy sources. For OC President Roger Forrer, this is an important step into the future of (classic car) mobility: "By using synfuel, we can preserve the motorsport tradition and make a positive contribution to climate protection at the same time."
Prominent field of participants
Well-known faces from the international racing scene and spectacular vehicles will enrich the Memorial Hill Climb. These include the original winning car from the first hill climb in Steckborn in 1955, which was driven by Albert Scherrer.
The 1949 Jaguar XK 120 Alu is now part of the collection of Christian J Jenny from Thalwil/ZH (photos). He will personally drive the vehicle from his Classic Jaguar Collection over the mountain route in 2023.
Classic car festival
The municipality of Steckborn becomes a Mecca for classic car fans on the race weekend. In addition to the starting vehicles and their racing spectacle along the route (spectator areas within walking distance), there will be an open paddock to visit - and catering will also be provided by a festival restaurant.
