In 2021, Peugeot is celebrating yet another success: its entry into the world of mobility for all. At the end of the summer of 1891, exactly 130 years ago, the first car delivered to a private individual in France was a Peugeot. That was just the beginning of a wonderful adventure.
Peugeot was founded through the efforts of one man and an entire family. To date, the brand has survived more than two centuries in a world of constant change. It has always adapted its products and services to the needs and requirements of its customers.
In 211 years, Peugeot and its products have found their way into millions of households - with cars and motorcycles, but also with tools, radios, sewing machines, pepper and coffee grinders and many other products, some of which have become true classics. Today, the brand is present in more than 160 countries and confirms every day Armand Peugeot's assessment that the car would make the Peugeot brand "one of the largest industrial companies in France".
The world has changed in 211 years and the pace of this change has accelerated significantly in the last decade. Digitalization and connectivity have given rise to new ways of thinking, new consumer habits and new ways of getting around. With its already highly electrified product range (70 percent of Peugeot models offer one or more electrified versions) and a new generation of connected infotainment introduced with the new Peugeot 308, the lion brand remains at the forefront of changing mobility today.
The development began 130 years ago: On October 2, 1891, Peugeot delivered the first passenger car to a private individual. Mr. Poupardin, a resident of Dornach, ordered his car on 27 August of the same year. It was a 4-seater with a 2 hp engine (Daimler).
Since that date in 1891, almost 75 million vehicles have been delivered in the 160 countries in which the brand is present.
Lovers of vintage cars (as well as newer vehicles) can admire a model of the Peugeot Type 3 at the Peugeot Adventure Museum in Sochaux, which is identical to the model delivered to Mr. Poupardin in 1891.
