BMW M is celebrating the production of its one-millionth BMW M vehicle. The anniversary vehicle, a BMW M3 in the BMW Individual special paint finish Fire Orange III, was manufactured at the BMW Group plant in Munich and presented to Franciscus van Meel, Managing Director of BMW M GmbH, by Peter Weber, Head of the BMW Group plant in Munich, during a festive ceremony.
The production anniversary marks a milestone for more than five decades of BMW M, characterized by exceptional performance, innovative strength, and the emotional joy of driving.
At the same time, it already looks toward the future: In the future, the BMW Group’s main plant in Munich will also produce the all-electric BMW M3 as the first high-performance model based on BMW M New Class technology. This marks the creation of another New Class model in Munich following the all-electric BMW i3—and at the same time, the next chapter in the BMW M success story.
“BMW M combines road and track capability with everyday practicality,” says Franciscus van Meel. “The one-millionth BMW M vehicle shows that these values are still held in the highest regard by our customers, even 40 years after the market launch of the first BMW M3. For us, this is an incentive to continuously further develop our BMW M high-performance vehicle portfolio—based on BMW M New Class technology—including fully electric models, in line with our core brand promise.”
The Future of the BMW Group Munich Plant Is Electric
With the production of the one-millionth BMW M vehicle, the BMW Group Munich plant underscores its central role in the future of the BMW M brand. As the BMW Group’s main plant, the facility combines its long-standing tradition of building sporty BMW models with the transition to electric mobility.
“The BMW M3 is closely linked to the BMW Group’s main plant in Munich,” says Peter Weber. “We are very pleased that the first all-electric BMW M3 will also be manufactured in Munich in the future. BMW M holds special emotional significance for our employees. This makes us all the more proud to be actively shaping the future of this icon.”
Production of the high-performance model will take place exclusively at the BMW Group’s main plant, where vehicles have been manufactured for more than 100 years. The current generation of the BMW M3 has been produced in Munich since 2020. Many employees therefore feel a particularly close connection to the vehicle. The future production of the all-electric BMW M3 also represents a commitment to the BMW Group’s historic home base and underscores its strategic role within the global production network.
BMW Group Munich Plant: A Pioneer in the Transition to Electric Mobility
The BMW Group Munich Plant plays a key role in the transition to electric mobility. Starting in 2027, the BMW Group will manufacture exclusively all-electric vehicles at this location. The plant has been successfully retrofitted for this purpose while remaining in continuous operation. Modern production structures, consistent digitalization, and close collaboration with development teams and suppliers lay the groundwork for continuing to efficiently produce a high-performance vehicle like the all-electric new BMW M3 in Munich.
A new body shop and a state-of-the-art vehicle assembly line, including new logistics areas, have been built on approximately one-third of the plant’s footprint. In total, the BMW Group is investing approximately 650 million euros in the transformation of the Munich plant into a production site exclusively for all-electric vehicles.
