When Porsche launched the 911 Turbo, the first European production sports car with a turbocharger, in 1974, the signs on the horizon looked bad with the energy crisis and fears of inflation. But 500 planned units soon turned into thousands and even tens of thousands to date. Eight generations have been built to date, this report compares them and shows the air-cooled ancestors in particular in over 200 pictures.
With the Porsche Turbo, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer raised the bar for super sports cars in 1974. At that time, nobody accelerated more brutally. The Zuffenhausen-based company managed to skillfully combine sportiness and comfort. The difference to the normal 911 had become so great as a result of many conversion measures that the new model was called the 930. By 1989, over 20,000 of the 930 had been built and contributed significantly to the growth of the German sports car manufacturer. Continuous model upgrades kept the 930 young. With the Porsche 911 Turbo, the Zuffenhausen-based company built a sports car that could certainly compete with the elite mid-range sports cars from Italy, and was even clearly superior to them in some disciplines. In March 1982, the Porsche 911 SC 3.0 Cabriolet was shown to the public for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show. The center of interest was a red example. Did it survive? At first it looked like it had, the photos were in the can. However, in the style of the not particularly successful Edgar Wallace film from 1961 entitled "The Mystery of the Red Orchid", the search for clues then turned into a real detective job ... From 1982, Porsche built the 911 SC Cabriolet, after it had previously only been possible to drive the Targa open-top. Despite a steep price premium compared to the Coupé, the Cabrio-Varante became very popular and remains so to this day. The original 1983 version is already considered a classic today.
