When Porsche launched the 911 Turbo, the first European production sports car with a turbocharger, in 1974, the signs on the horizon looked bad with the energy crisis and fears of inflation. But 500 planned units soon turned into thousands and even tens of thousands to date. Eight generations have been built to date, this report compares them and shows the air-cooled ancestors in particular in over 200 pictures.
The 911 Speedster based on the G model had been a surprise success, but the successor based on the 964 came late and only as a narrow version. While Mercedes-Benz was gaining ground in the GT1 class at the end of the 1990s, Porsche was struggling on the racetrack. But when it came to winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1998 to mark the 50th anniversary of Porsche's automobile construction, the GT1/98 had exactly what was needed.
