Until 1953, Plymouth successfully held the third position among American car brands, but the years 1953 and 1954 were to become a dry spell. Different versions and designs of the Plymouth Belvedere, which were the forerunners of the revolutionary 55 and 56 models, were produced during this period. Virgil Exner built a whole series of show cars in the service of Chrysler. One of the most extreme and sporty vehicles is the Plymouth XNR, which was capable of a top speed of around 240 km/h and attracted attention due to its asymmetrical appearance. In the fall of 1961, the Asimmetrica was on the Ghia stand at the Turin Motor Show. As its name suggested, it was asymmetrically shaped and thus quoted the slanted in-line six-cylinder engine from the Chrysler Valiant. Ghia hoped for series production, but nothing came of it. Instead, the car became the property of a famous novelist. This article tells the story of the Ghia Asimmetria and shows it in many historical and current pictures, together with its predecessor and successor.
The Chrysler car brand pursued an ambitious project in the 1960s: they wanted to create a new car model that used a gas turbine instead of a reciprocating piston engine as the drive technology. In order to determine the feasibility and marketability, they turned to journalists and everyday drivers. Almost sixty years later, we know that the gas turbine was not successful at the time, so it is all the more interesting to read in this historical report what people thought about it at the time. In addition, many original photos and even two manuals on the Chrysler turbine car have been published.
The Ford Mustang created a new vehicle category called "pony cars", i.e. not too big, sporty cars with everyday utility and coupé stature. But this honor actually belonged to Chrysler/Plymouth, because the Barracuda appeared two weeks before the Mustang. And the Barracuda also made its mark. The first series was notable for its huge rear window. Just one month after Ford presented its successful Mustang, Plymouth launched its rival product: the Barracuda. This car was to be produced for exactly ten years. Three main generations of the pony car were built, with small V6 engines, but also with really big V8 engines. There were even racing versions. Chrysler Valiant - pretty clean
The Chrysler Valiant is "clean" in several respects, firstly because it has the "Cleaner Air System", secondly because it is characterized by its functional lines and thirdly because it is currently powered by synthetic fuel, i.e. CO2-neutral. But there is even more to tell about this car, as the extensively illustrated article shows.
Mitsubishi built the Sapporo coupé from 1976 to 1984 and marketed it under various names around the world. From 1978, the elegant coupé also came to Europe, where it had to compete against the Opel Manta, Ford Capri and VW Scirocco, among others, and did not do badly at all thanks to its contemporary technology and good quality. This report portrays a Mitsubishi Sapporo 2000 GS/R from 1979 and describes the history and construction of the now very rare Japanese car, supplemented by historical photographs, brochures and a sound sample.
