When the Austin/Morris Cooper appeared in 1961, it was already seen as a very fast car. When the Cooper S was presented two years later, journalists described it as a rocket for the road. With 76 hp and just over 600 kg, it was capable of a lot more than 50 years ago, including three victories at the Monte Carlo Rally. Today, the Cooper S is a first-class cult car. This driving report is about a Morris Cooper S Mk I from 1967. It tells the story of the fast Minis and shows them in current and historical pictures. Between 1964 and 1993, almost 50,000 Mini Moke vehicles were built, rustic leisure cars with little weather protection and dimensions and performance typical of small cars. The car, once designed as a military vehicle, is still popular today and now fetches prices that are more than ten times the original price. Gone were the days in the seventies when hardly anyone drove small cars, because in the age of parking space shortages and second cars, short, agile cars with as little superfluous sheet metal as possible were in demand like never before. The four candidates in the 1974 comparison test - Fiat 128 Rally, Simca 1000 Rallye 2, Autobianchi A 112 Abarth and Mini 1275 GT - had to prove themselves both in everyday traffic and on the Hockenheimring.
The Austin Mini was Alec Issigonis' masterpiece. The indestructible little car, which could comfortably transport four people in a length of just 3.05 meters, was built from 1959 to 2000. Rally and race victories also made it an icon in motorsport. The Mini concepts are still a role model today and the original Mini even outlived its successor, the Mini Metro. This report looks back on the history of the Mini, shows an almost new example from 1982 in detail and documents Mini enthusiasts with well over 120 photos, sales brochures, many further references and even the original instructions from 1960.
