Forty years old, the Lancia Beta series has matured into a classic. This applies to the now rare saloon as well as the pretty coupé, the open Spider variant, the practical HPE and the sporty Montecarlo. This report briefly introduces the reader to the model series and shows the different variants in old and new pictures, supplemented by sales brochures from the time.
A six-cylinder Lancia was expected, but the new Gamma's 2.5-liter displacement was divided between just four cylinders, a disappointment for connoisseurs and the dedicated circle of buyers. However, on closer inspection and testing, the compact car proved to be the uncompromising realization of a technical philosophy. This test report from 1976 explains whether the Lancia Gamma achieved the status of a luxury car.
After Fiat had rescued the luxury brand Lancia in 1969, the Beta Series 2 in particular was intended to revive Lancia sales from 1976. The factory promised "a comfort sedan that is unparalleled in its class". The stylistically and technically revised Beta also had sporting talent. This test report from 1976 explains whether the hoped-for success would have been possible.
In 1976, Lancia presented the Gamma series, consisting of a hatchback saloon and a stunningly designed notchback coupé. With a four-cylinder boxer engine, the vehicles were sufficiently motorized, but the competition offered six or more cylinders for less money in some cases. The luxury class Lancia thus remained a marginal phenomenon and was withdrawn from the range in 1984. This report looks back at the history of the Lancia Gamma Coupé and shows an example from 1982 in detail, supplemented by historical photographs and pictures of two concept cars based on the same model.
Subsequent notchback versions of hatchbacks always look a little awkward. The Lancia Trevi, the Beta with a rucksack, was not well received by the press at the time. And then there was the dashboard, which didn't really fit in with the rest of the car.
