In the 1920s and 1930s, the car manufacturer Lagonda was one of the crème de la crème and sold sports cars that had a large fan base. The 2 Litre Tourer even competed successfully at Le Mans and excelled with its advanced technical characteristics. Ninety years later, it still looks very sporty and leaves many a younger car behind. This driving report is dedicated to the Lagonda 14/60 HP 2 Litre Low Chassis Tourer, built from 1929, and shows it in many photos.
With the 4.5 liter V12 engine, W. O. Bentley delivered his masterpiece. Together with a stable chassis and modern suspension design and brakes, the Lagonda engineers created the best saloon in England, if not the world, at the time. The V12 was available in various body styles, but just 192 were built before the war put an end to production. This driving report describes the history of the Lagonda V12 and portrays a V12 Saloon from 1939 in detail, supplemented by two original brochures and contemporary test reports.
One of the most expensive ways to drive a six-cylinder tourer at the end of the 1940s was the Lagonda 2 1/2 Litre. With its impressively modern design, however, the English car remained rare due to its high price. However, its engine formed the basis for the famous Aston Martin DB models. The Lagonda 3 Litre was produced between 1953 and 1958, following on from the 2 1/2 Litre, which had been produced from 1947. Similar in character to its predecessor, the larger 3 Litre impressed above all with its more fashionable design and more powerful, larger engine. High prices and insufficient demand meant the end of the last genuine Lagonda. This article portrays a Lagonda 3 Litre Drophead Coupé and describes the history of the model, supplemented by historical illustrations and three sales brochures.
From 1961 to 1965, David Brown built the Lagonda Rapide, a top-of-the-range five-seater saloon designed to combine sportiness and comfort. Only 55 cars were sold, the price was probably too high and the design did not convince all potential buyers. This driving report describes the history of the noble saloon, portrays an example from 1963 and shows it in historical and current pictures, including two original brochures.
