From the outside, the new Ford Taunus was immediately appealing. From the driver's perspective, however, it was not able to fully inspire - especially not when looking down from the windshield. While other minor shortcomings could still be passed off as teething troubles, the dashboard was perceived as a clear misconstruction. Ford took the American youth by storm with the Mustang in April 1964. At the beginning of 1969, it was Europe's turn to be delighted by Ford with a stylish everyday sports car for the whole family. The Capri combined reliable mass-produced technology with an incredibly attractive coupé body and became a global success. With the model change from the 12M to the Taunus, Ford also changed its principles. Away with false modesty. From now on, you can show what you've got - and even a little more. While the splendid new shape met with harsh criticism from the trade press, it was well received by the public. It was this that made the Ford Taunus TC a sales success despite teething troubles and design weaknesses. As the opulent 2300 GLX, the Taunus suddenly made even far more expensive cars look cheap.
Ford described the new Escort RS 2000, which had been upgraded with a two-liter OHC engine and was intended to challenge the BMW 2002, as a secret sports car with exceptional performance. With 100 hp, it was the most attractive and most affordable offering in this segment in Germany. This test report from that time determines whether it was competitive regardless of the price.
The era of sporty saloons began with the BMW 2002. Opel launched its first attacks on the Munich-based domain with its Ascona 19 SR, followed belatedly by Ford with the Escort RS 2000. Audi was the last to push for a place in the 100 hp society with the 80 GT. In 1973 a comparison test checked whether the newcomer from Ingolstadt could catch up with or even overtake its earlier competitors.

With the Escort RS 2000, Ford presented a sports car for the masses in 1973. It was not expensive and its suitability for everyday use was hardly diminished, but with 100 hp and a kerb weight of 915 kg, the fast Escort provided plenty of forward momentum. This driving report is about an RS-2000 version from 1974 that has been converted into a rally car with an impressive history and shows it in many photos. After the Escort, Ford has now also fine-tuned the Taunus. Space, performance, road holding, comfort and price put the new Ford Taunus L 1.6 in a leading position compared to conventionally powered cars.
