Hardly any other car combines racing car genes, design elegance and granturismo qualities as perfectly as a Fiat Dino Spider. It was built from 1966 to 1973, first as a two-liter and later as a 2.4-liter version. Almost 1,600 Spiders were sold, and today they are coveted classics. Between 1966 and 1971, Abarth produced the 124/1300 model, which combined the coupé body of the Fiat 850 with the engine of the 124 saloon. With 75 hp, the compact car offered very competitive driving performance, but this was also reflected in a self-confident price. Between 1967 and 1975, Fiat built the 124 Sport Coupé, which combined sportiness, comfort and family-friendly space with an elegant design like almost no other competitor. Its success proved the Turin-based car manufacturer right, as the coupé, which was designed internally at Fiat, sold considerably better than the Spider from Pininfarina, which was produced at the same time. Today, however, the Coupé is rarely seen, while the Cabriolet has become a popular classic. At the end of the sixties, the Ford Capri was the family coupé to beat. Fiat competed against it with the 124 Coupé, but even with the most powerful variant it had to overcome a deficit in cylinders and displacement. In practice, however, two fewer cylinders and a 700 cm3 smaller displacement had much less of an impact than expected. Thanks to its modern design, the Fiat was also aimed at real sports car fans.
