With the 124, Fiat presented a car that was at the lower end of the mid-size class in terms of engine capacity, but whose engine power, spaciousness and possible driving performance were far higher. Four doors, a powerful engine, plenty of space and excellent roadholding were offered at an unusually attractive price. The Fiat 124 Sport Spider immediately captured the hearts of sports drivers all over the world. Even the test editor of the magazine "hobby" could not resist the charm of the elegant sports car from Italy. In 1966, Fiat presented the 124 Sport Spider at the Turin Motor Show. The design came from Pininfarina/Tjaarda, the technology from the 124 saloon. The package turned out to be a hit, as the convertible was built until 1985 and around 200,000 units were sold. At the end of the sixties, the Ford Capri was the family coupé to beat. Fiat competed against it with the 124 Coupé, but even with the most powerful variant it had to overcome a deficit in cylinders and displacement. In practice, however, two fewer cylinders and a 700 cm3 smaller displacement had much less of an impact than expected. Thanks to its modern design, the Fiat was also aimed at real sports car fans. Between 1966 and 1971, Abarth produced the 124/1300 model, which combined the coupé body of the Fiat 850 with the engine of the 124 saloon. With 75 hp, the compact car offered very competitive driving performance, but this was also reflected in a self-confident price. Around 40 years ago, the World Rally Championship was contested with special Gran Turismo sports cars in the style of an Alpine-Renault, Lancia Fulvia or Fiat 124 Abarth. Those who wanted to be at the front of the field ensured the best possible conditions with a small series of at least 500 units. In those years, Fiat had acquired a taste for rallying and commissioned the newly acquired Abarth racing car manufacturer to upgrade the Fiat 124 Spider into a rally-winning vehicle. The result was the road-going version of the Fiat 124 Abarth Rally, an evolutionary vehicle with sporty characteristics. Around four decades later, Fiat once again presented an Abarth 124 Spider. This report will show whether the new model has anything in common with its rally ancestor.
Just over 1000 examples of the Fiat Abarth 124 Rallye were built between 1972 and 1974 and they actually served only one purpose, namely to enable Fiat to win rallies. It was only marginally successful in this, but as a "waste product", so to speak, an attractive road version was created for anyone who could afford a car costing around 20,000 francs/mark at the time. When the Fiat 124 Sport Spider returned to Europe in 1982 under a false name, it was unrecognizable at first glance. But those who could look past the exterior soon realized that not so much had changed between the thick bumpers. At a time when reason increasingly ruled in automotive engineering, it was nice that it still existed at all. As the Pininfarina Spidereuropa, it was one of the last representatives of the classic two-seater sports convertible.
