Maserati had shown with the 3500 GT that a comfortable coupé that could also accommodate more than two people could find buyers, even a surprisingly large number of buyers. Enzo Ferrari did not want to stand by and watch, and so the Ferrari 250 GT 2+2 was created, which was so good that Enzo himself enjoyed driving it. The Ferrari 250 GTO is considered the most expensive car in history after one changed hands for USD 35 million in 2012. Just 39 examples were built, including three particularly rare 4-liter versions, also known as the 330 GTO. This report looks back at the history of the rare Gran Turismo sports car and portrays a 330 GTO in detail, supplemented by archive photos and the chassis list of the 39 GTO vehicles.
In 1963, Hobby compiled the ten fastest sports cars in the opinion of the editors and compared them according to their characteristics. The contestants were: Aston-Martin DB 4, Chevrolet Corvette, Ferrari 250 GTO, Maserati 3500 GT, Ferrari 400 Superamerica, Jaguar Type E, Mercedes Benz 300 SL, Porsche Carrera 2, Maserati 5000 GT and Studebaker Avanti. However, it is not easy to get over the fact that the Hobby people made a mistake with the picture of the 250 GTO.
The 330 GT Shooting Brake, presented to the public at the 50th Turin Motor Show in 1968, probably went down in history as the last Ferrari to be coachbuilt by Alfredo Vignale. It caught the eye there, but not everyone liked it. And 50 years later, the American design is still causing a stir. This vehicle report tells the story of the Ferrari 330 GT Shooting Brake, which was designed by Luigi Chinetti Jr. together with Bob Peak and built by Vignale, illustrated with photos from the long life of the unique Ferrari station wagon.
Paul Frère's comparative test, in which the Belgian racing driver and journalist compared the Lamborghini 400 GT with its rivals, the Ferrari 330 GTC and Porsche 911 S, in 1966, comprises almost 30,000 letters. The author was well aware that the Porsche was actually in a different league, but found that the much cheaper car from Zuffenhausen could keep up surprisingly well with the two hot hatches from Italy. Between 1946 and 1966, around two dozen Ferrari 275 GTB/C, i.e. competition versions of the Ferrari 275 GTB, were built. Equipped with lightweight aluminum bodies and more powerful engines, they competed with the GT sports cars from Chevrolet, Porsche, etc. during their active period. Perhaps the most famous of these Berlinettas is chassis number 09079, which was used by Scuderia Filipinetti.
