In the second half of the 1950s, sports car buyers became increasingly demanding; it was no longer enough for them to have the best possible performance, they also wanted to travel in comfort and style. Aston Martin offered the DB4 for this clientele, Maserati the 3500 GT, Ferrari developed the 250 GT Berlinetta together with Pinin Farina and presented it in the summer of 1958. With around 350 examples built, the coupé has remained rare. This vehicle report tells the story of the coupé and shows it in historical and current photos.
Wolfgang Seidel was a well-known German racing driver who enjoyed motorsport and competed around the world in a wide variety of cars. It was therefore no coincidence that he was taken with the Ferrari 250 GT "Tour de France". However, the fact that he won his category in the 1958 Gaisberg race with it had as much to do with the Ferrari's legendary qualities as it did with his skills as a driver. And the Palmares also included many other victories and placings. This vehicle report tells the story of the Ferrari 250 GT, which was given the event name as an epithet because of its four overall victories in the Tour de France.
Nowadays, Ferrari builds more cars in half a week than it did per year in the late 1950s. The sports cars from Maranello were very exclusive back then and at the same time closer to racing cars than they are today. The 250 Gran Turismo was built between 1956 and 1958, coachbuilt by Boano and Ellena, among others. This vehicle report is dedicated to the latter coupé, of which only around 15 are said to still exist in their original condition.
The Ferrari 250 Granturismo Coupé Pininfarina was the first mass-produced sports car from Maranello for the rich and successful of the late sixties. Among them was a certain Ferruccio Lamborghini. His dissatisfaction ultimately led to the sports cars from Sant'Agata.
From around 1955, most Ferraris were fitted with Pininfarina bodywork, if only because Battista Pininfarina had maintained good contacts with Enzo Ferrari for years. Bertone did not succeed in breaking this long-lasting series, despite several attempts, including one car based on the 166 Inter and two based on the 250 GT. This report looks at the first of the two 250 GT derivatives and shows both in pictures.
In 1959, the range of sports cars on offer was still quite limited. The magazine 'hobby' counted around 30 models and the comparison fitted onto just a few magazine pages. The author Werner Oswald saw the reason for the comparatively small number of models on offer in the transition to self-supporting bodies and the need for rationalization. In 1959, an American bought a Ferrari 250 GT California Spider and covered the first 3000 km or so in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In the end, the car finished in fifth place, even though it had not yet been fully completed. This early California Spider is one of just under 100 examples built with a long and short wheelbase, all of which were sold for millions. With its Le Mans history, however, this Spider is certainly one of the most significant.
