Various automobile factories had already built sports cars in pre-war Germany, but none came close to the popularity of the BMW 328. After the Second World War, BMW continued the sports car tradition with the V8 two-seater 507. The convertible, which was exceptional in every respect, was the star of the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in 1955, but was only affordable for the well-heeled. BMW was only able to sell 252 vehicles before production was discontinued in March 1959. This report describes the history of the BMW 507 and shows it in many illustrations.
In the summer of 1959, AR tested two versions of the BMW 507, namely the normal version with 150 hp and the modified version with 165 hp. The AR tester was very impressed by the car, praised its performance, but also criticized its controls and ergonomics. However, the BMW 507 proved that an above-average fast and safe car retains its superiority even in the age of convoys and congested roads. Moreover, it left a strong, lasting impression as an automobile of reliable character that truly belongs to the best performers among the two-seater fast utility cars for the highest demands.
Cars that are worth significantly more than their original price 10, 20 or 50 years after purchase do not come onto the market that often. Especially not if the purchase prices at the time are adjusted for inflation. Nevertheless, there are some cars from the past 70 years that today change hands for up to 300 times their original purchase price, even taking inflation into account. We have compiled 20 of the best new car investments, evaluated them on the basis of Classic Data State 2 market prices and briefly commented on them. Of course, we had to make a selection, but we consider it to be representative.
