When Fiat took over Alfa Romeo in 1986, Formula 1 activities were no longer an option. The Alfa 75 was becoming less and less competitive in touring car racing, so they turned to something completely new: Ecclestone's fresh ProCar series. In no time at all, they built a racing car with Formula 1 technology based on the new silhouette formula, but with the shape of a production Alfa 164. The result was breathtaking, but could never be used in races because no other manufacturer wanted to compete against Alfa and the series was stillborn. When Alfa Romeo presented the Type 164 in 1987, its Tipo 4 siblings Lancia Thema, Fiat Croma and Saab 9000 had already been on the market for years. Nevertheless, the Alfa Romeo was probably the most interesting of the four platform cars, as it exuded a great deal of driving pleasure. This report describes the history of the Alfa Romeo 164 and shows it in current and historical pictures as well as in the sales literature of the time.
Hardly anyone had expected this in 1991! At the Geneva Motor Show, Alfa Romeo presented the 164 Protéo coupé-cabriolet study with a four-valve three-liter V6, all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering. Despite a positive response, the prototype did not go into series production; Fiat and Alfa Romeo had other plans.
