He came from Scotland, built bicycles in Cleveland/Ohio from 1891 and his first car as early as 1896: Alexander Winton was a highly talented designer and - something that is rather rare - also a talented entrepreneur. In 1897, he drove one of the first cars from his Winton Motor Carriage Companyaround a racecourse at an impressive 54 km/h. Shortly afterwards, his journey from Cleveland to New York City in a two-cylinder car attracted a lot of attention and lured buyers. As a result, Winton took a newspaper reporter with him on his second trip to New York in 1899. As a result, sales soared and the journalist became Winton's advertising manager. The media hype also meant that the term automobile became established for the Horseless Carriage.
