There are body shapes that look sensational when they are introduced and yet are quickly forgotten. And then there are those that are unobtrusively simple but still look modern years later. One of the latter was the Wartburg 353 presented in 1966. Its contours were designed by Hans Fleischer, of whom we do not know to what extent he was ever committed to the all-decisive SED (Socialist Unity Party of Germany). Masterpiece or not - in any case, this four-door notchback body, which always rested on a box frame chassis, continued to be built almost unchanged until the brand's demise on January 31, 1991.
