William Riley took over a bicycle factory in Coventry in 1890 , for which his son Percy developed automobiles from 1896. The single-cylinder engine of 1898 was the first to have a mechanically controlled intake valve instead of a vacuum-operated one. However, three- and four-wheeled cars were only produced sporadically. In 1903, Percy and his brothers founded the Riley Engine Co. and built engines for Riley motorcycles and their competitor Singer. The first production car emerged from a four-wheeled V2 prototype from 1905. In 1913, the brothers formed the Riley Motor Manufacturing Co. and soon the body company Midland Motor Bodies.
